Internationally recognized conductor Vinay Parameswaran leads the Eugene Symphony in Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s beloved and passionate “Pathétique” Symphony, his final composition. The evening begins with Nina Shekhar’s haunting Lumina, which explores the spectrum of light, dark, and the hues in between with contrasting textures and harmonies. In between, we will hear Franz Liszt’s melodic and daring Piano Concerto No. 1.

On Tuesday, April 16th, join us for a Piano Master Class with our guest artist, acclaimed American pianist, Drew Petersen. Petersen will work with three talented piano students from the community as part of the Laura Avery Visiting Masters Series.

Last season, Drew Petersen’s performance of Chopin’s Piano Concerto No. 2 brought ACO audiences to their feet. Rave reviews and longing for more music from this acclaimed young pianist are bringing him back to our stage! A former child prodigy who has come wondrously to the fore, Petersen’s performances have been described as being deeply expressive making it come alive and touching all who hear it. This December audience members will experience Drew’s breathtaking talent in an intimate setting with a program entitled “An Invitation to the Dance” featuring pieces from Weber, Chopin, and more.

Paris in the 1920s was a place of great artistic conflict and excitement. While some like Igor Stravinsky and Pablo Picasso embraced Neo-Classicism and a "return to order" in the aftermath of the Great War, others launched bold new experiments. Under the leadership of André Breton, Surrealism sought to shock the bourgeoisie, while a passion for African and African American art and culture, from jazz to art to dance, galvanized the city, personified above all by Josephine Baker. Join PCE for a screening of the classic Surrealist film Entr’acte (René Clair, 1924) with the original score by Erik Satie performed live. The program also includes film footage of Baker dancing and a tribute to jazz great Sidney Bechet. It culminates with Maurice Ravel's partly-jazz-inspired Piano Concerto in G featuring soloist Drew Petersen, winner of the 2018 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 2017 American Pianists Award. Presented in collaboration with Harry Cooper, senior curator of modern art at the National Gallery of Art.

Having performed with the THSO on short notice in May 2022, Petersen left the audience in awe with his impeccable charm and phenomenal musicality. The evening will commence with Florence Price’s bluesy, toe-tapping Juba Dance and will conclude with the beautiful, lush melodies of Sibelius’ Symphony No. 2.

A delightful three-course meal will be served at 5:30 PM in the McKee Family Heritage Ballroom, conveniently located next door to Tilson Auditorium in Tirey Hall on the campus of Indiana State University.
