Jules Massanet’s «Werther», based on Goethe’s famous Sturm und Drang novel, is a poignant opera rife with emotion. The music subtly depicts the tense triangle of relationships between a love-sick young Werther, his darling Charlotte, and her staid fiancé Albert. Werther refuses to accept a life without dreams and finally – when faced with his unrequited love – takes his own life. Jonathan Tetlman, of the most successful of the new generation of tenors, makes his debut at the Opernhaus Zürich.

The first premiere of the season on the State Opera stage will be Jacques Offenbach's opera Les Contes d'Hoffmann – and the Opera Children's Orchestra will also be performing this imaginative music. Goethe's classic "Die Leiden des jungen Werthers (The Sorrows of Young Werther)", an eighteenth-century novel depicting the anguish of love and heartbreak, has been read all over the world. Composed over a century after the novel, Jules Massenet's opera Werther adds French romantic passion to Goethe's text, bringing it even closer to the heart. The work has many memorable moments, from the dramatic overture to Charlotte's "Air des lettres" and Werther's soulful aria "Porquoi me réveiller?" The staging by Nicolas JOEL, first seen in 2016, faithfully recreates the atmosphere of the original story and places the focus on Werther's sentiments.

Charlotte repeatedly turns Werther down, although she shares his feelings. It ends with Werther taking his life on Christmas Eve.

During the Twelfth Night weekend, Norrlandsoperan" class="css-u850">Norrlandsoperan opens its doors for a glittering, high-class opera gala with carefully selected treats for opera connoisseurs and beginners alike. Swedish rising star Rebecka Wallroth makes her debut at Norrlandsoperan and as the male counterpart we hear the well-known tenor Per Lindström.

The evening begins in the good spirit of La Scala with Italian splendor. Rebecka Wallroth sets the tone with the famous Rossini aria “Una voce poco fa” from The Barber of Seville followed by the duet “Un soave non so che” from Cinderella by the same composer. This is followed by another soprano number from the bel canto repertoire, this time from Bellini’s opera I Capuleti ei Montecchi . The first set is rounded off in grand style by Per Lindström with Puccini’s beloved tenor arias “E lucevan le stelle” from Tosca and “Che gelida manina” from La Bohème.

In 2018, the music world was amazed: 11-year-old Christian Li presented himself in the final of the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists as an outstanding virtuoso, mature interpreter, and charismatic ensemble leader. In addition to the first prize, he also secured two coveted special prizes and went down in the history of the famous competition as the youngest ever winner. Following his successful chamber music debut at the Rheingau Music Festival last year, we are delighted to present Christian Li's grand stage at the Kurhaus this season and welcome the up-and-coming violinist together with the Australian Youth Orchestra, which is considered an ambassador of musical excellence Down Under.

“So, you too, the famous Knight of the Rueful Countenance, did not escape the fate of all famous heroes of literature. And you undertook your own travels onto the stage!” wrote one critic who on 19 February 1910 attended the premiere of the opera Don Quichotte in Monte-Carlo. Strictly speaking, the cavalier of La Mancha had already “made it” onto the stage of the opera house, though never before with such triumph. To a great extent, Massenet’s last opera owes this triumph to one legendary performer of the title role – Fyodor Chaliapin. It was specifically for him that the opera was in fact written. And so Don Quichotte is that rare example of an opera for a basso cantante, a “singing bass”. In as much as the role of Sancho Panza is also performed by a low male voice and the role of the fair Dulcinée by a mezzo-soprano, the entire cast of protagonists here forms an ensemble that is unusual in terms of its colours.

This season, works for horn can be enjoyed in the chamber concert of the hr Symphony Orchestra in Friedberg - all about hr solo horn player Marc Gruber in a recently modified program. He will be able to be heard in a duo with Beethoven and Glazunov and, as planned, in a sonorous and soulful trio with Brahms. Instead of the planned horn concerto by Ethel Smyth and the "Music with Horn" by Vagn Holmboe, Grace Kyung Eun Lee will also present three distinctive duos for violin and piano in the first part of the concert.

In an evening presented by Zenaida Yanowsky, former Principal Dancer of the Royal Ballet, we invite you to fall in love with Prokofiev's Romeo and Juliet, to be enchanted by Stravinsky's The Firebird, and to discover some of the most beautiful music ever written.
