This season, works for horn can be enjoyed in the chamber concert of the hr Symphony Orchestra in Friedberg - all about hr solo horn player Marc Gruber in a recently modified program. He will be able to be heard in a duo with Beethoven and Glazunov and, as planned, in a sonorous and soulful trio with Brahms. Instead of the planned horn concerto by Ethel Smyth and the "Music with Horn" by Vagn Holmboe, Grace Kyung Eun Lee will also present three distinctive duos for violin and piano in the first part of the concert.

Albert Roussel’s Sérénade combines flute and harp with string trio for a work that is alternatingly haunting and lighthearted. The program concludes with Mozart’s jolly Wind Serenade for two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, and two horns. Composed to impress a potential patron, the elegant work has been delighting audiences for over 200 years!

Ostend was Europe’s leading seaside town in the late 19th century. A place where you could enjoy sun, sea and beach. Where one could parade among the beau monde. Where you could simultaneously listen and be seen at the Kursaal’s renowned concerts and recitals. They had the very greatest conductors and composers on the rostrum and the largest stars in classical music were visiting… and one James Sidney Edouard Ensor was in the loyal audience. The USC Thornton Opera and the USC Thornton Symphony presents Chérubin, a 1905 opera by French composer Jules Massenet.
 
What happened to Cherubino after he left the Count’s estate in Mozart's Le Nozze di Figaro? Massenet considers this question with his confection of an opera, presented by the singer-actors of Thornton’s Vocal Arts department and musicians of the Orchestras program.

In the opera, which couples lively Spanish musical references with French Romanticism, the title character Chérubin must choose between the glamorous ballet dancer L’Ensoleillad, La Comtesse, La Baronne and the ever-faithful Nina. Chérubin is a touching, funny and moving story enveloped with Massenet's glorious music.

American violinist Kevin Zhu has amassed an outstanding record of concert performances and competition wins since he began playing violin at age three. Praised for his “awesome technical command and maturity” (The Strad) and “absolute virtuosity, almost blinding in its incredible purity” (L’ape musicale), Kevin regularly performs on the world’s largest stages, ranging from Carnegie Hall in New York to London’s Royal Festival Hall to the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. After our first performance together back in 2019 and a solo performance of Dvořák’s Cello Concerto with the MSO, Thomas Mesa returns as we collaborate once again in a program of organ and cello music. Mr. Mesa and I will both perform works by women composers, such as Nadia Boulanger’s gorgeous Trois Pièces, as well as a solo cello work written for him by Spanish composer Andrea Casarrubios. We will close this exciting evening with a commissioned work written for the two of us, Daniel Ficarri’s Sonata in C minor for Organ and Cello, which was inspired by our first performance at Overture Hall. The Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra joins forces with the University of Northern Colorado combined chorus to embark on an adventure across Europe. Experience wit, tragedy, and joy from Massenet’s Overture for the Greek tragedy Phèdre to Jacques Ibert’s honeymoon-inspired Ports of Call and Ravel’s only unaccompanied choral piece, Trois Chansons, a cleverly original collection of three fairy tale-like songs. The concert closes with Francis Poulenc’s Gloria, which is described as “borderline sacrilegious” for its mischievous setting of the Catholic Mass texts.

One of the astonishing facts of music history is that almost all of the great operas based on Goethe were written in France. Alongside Gounod's and Berlioz's Faust settings and Ambroise Thomas's MIGNON, Jules Massenet's WERTHER is the most prominent example in this series. Premiered in Vienna in 1892, the work is also one of Massenet's most successful operas and, in its expressive immediacy, a pinnacle of the "drame lyrique".
