Two crown jewels of the chamber music repertoire— Ravel’s hypnotic Piano Trio and Brahms’s grand Piano Quartet in A Major—share a program with Elizabeth Ogonek’s Lightenings, a stunning and complementary piece that the Festival commissioned and premiered in 2016. Pianist Ran Dank, whom The Washington Post praised for playing with “explosive force and triumphant exultation,” is featured in the Ravel and Ogonek, and Haochen Zhang, hailed for his “preternatural virtuosity” by The Boston Music Intelligencer, joins violinist Paul Huang, violist Toby Appel, and cellist Peter Stumpf for the Brahms.

Join us for an extraordinary evening of contemporary music at the "musica viva: François-Xavier Roth" concert, featuring the Symphonieorchester des Bayerischen Rundfunks. This remarkable event will take place on Friday, April 12, 2024, at 8:00 pm in the majestic Herkulessaal of the Munich Residence. An introduction to the evening's program will be provided at 6:45 pm, offering insights into the night's performances.

The concert will showcase an impressive lineup of works, including the world premiere of Francesco Filidei's Concerto for viola and orchestra, commissioned by the Bavarian Radios’ musica viva series and Milano Musicá Associazione per la musica contemporanea. The program also features Elisabeth Ogonek's "Cloudline" for orchestra 2021, commissioned by the BBC Proms and Los Angeles Philharmonic, and Iannis Xenakis' "Aïs" for baritone, percussion, and orchestra 1979-80, a piece commissioned by the Bavarian Radios’ musica viva series in 1980.

Under the baton of François-Xavier Roth, the concert will see performances by esteemed artists including baritone Georg Nigl, percussionist Dirk Rothbrust, violist Antoine Tamestit, and sound designer Norbert Ommer. The evening promises to be a profound exploration of contemporary music, highlighted by Xenakis' "Aïs," a piece that delves into the themes of death and the afterlife, and Filidei's Viola Concerto, a new addition to the contemporary music repertoire.

This concert is a part of the Bavarian Radios’ musica viva series, renowned for being one of the world’s most prestigious platforms for contemporary and future-oriented music. The series has been instrumental in premiering experimental works and performances for orchestra and chamber music.

In this evening of manic melodies, the frenzied energy felt in Shostakovich’s first cello concerto is paired with the dark and turbulent power of Brahms’ Symphony No. 4. The program also features a contemporary piece by Elizabeth Ogonek as part of the California Festival: A Celebration of New Music, a two-week state-wide music initiative showcasing the most compelling and forward-looking voices in performances of works written in the past five years.

Argentinian pianist Ingrid Fliter is a singular artist. She enters the emotional world of each composer, captivating listeners. Fliter returns to the SLSO with Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto, continuing the SLSO’s cycle. Conductor Elim Chan paints vivid natural landscapes. The bracing Scottish winds press against us in Mendelssohn’s Third Symphony, then the still night air of Elizabeth Ogonek’s Moondog sends us to a place of calm.

Returning to the Granada Theatre stage for the first time since CAMA and the LA Phil’s 100th Anniversary concert on March 6, 2020, the venerated orchestra and century-long local favorite brings its trademark artistic programming featuring convincingly interpreted new works alongside the great masterpieces of the classical canon. The LA Phil will be guest-directed by Elim Chan, Chief Conductor of the Antwerp Symphony Orchestra and Principal Guest Conductor of the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, and joined by 2018 Gilmore Artist Award-winner Igor Levit as soloist in Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto.

Hailed for his “staggering command of centuries of repertory” (The New Yorker), Igor Levit performs Beethoven’s Third Piano Concerto—the first of his concertos written in his second period, heroic style. Former Dudamel Fellow Elim Chan, whom the Los Angeles Times praised for conducting with “sophisticated grace,” leads Mendelssohn’s sunny “Italian” Symphony as well as a U.S. premiere of Cloudline by Elizabeth Ogonek, which offers a lyrical homage to ancient musical forms and techniques.
