The program promises an exploration of contemporary repertoire for soprano and cello, shining a spotlight on compositions by women, non-binary, and LGBTQ composers, including works by Jessie Montgomery, Heather Gilligan, and arrangements by the duo themselves. The evening will also feature compositions by Ned Rorem, Francis Poulenc, and Claude Debussy, promising a diverse and engaging auditory experience.

Jules Bieber, a cellist, educator, and musical curator based in Brooklyn, NY, is known for her versatility across various musical styles and her commitment to creating inclusive classical music spaces. She has co-founded ChamberQUEER, an LGBTQ chamber music organization, and has performed on prestigious stages such as Carnegie Hall and The Metropolitan Museum of Art. Danielle Buonaiuto, praised for her "terrific clarity and color" (Baltimore Sun), is an accomplished soprano with a focus on contemporary compositions, having premiered over sixty songs and roles in six operas. Together, they form Duo Callisto, focusing on developing and commissioning new repertoire for cello and voice.

The Canadian Opera Company closes its 2022-23 season with the world premiere of Pomegranate by composer Kye Marshall and writer/librettist Amanda Hale, a love story between Suli and Cassia that time-skips between a women’s temple in ancient Pompeii to a Toronto lesbian bar in 1981 after the city’s infamous bathhouse raids, starring mezzo-soprano Adanya Dunn and soprano Danielle Buonaiuto (MM ’12, Voice). Pomegranate runs June 2, 3, and 4 during Pride Toronto 2023 at the Canadian Opera Company Theatre in Toronto.

Bay Area artist Jay DeFeo had one guideline when she began painting The Rose in 1958: to create “an idea that had a center.” Her sole focus for eight years, it bloomed into a 12.7 x 8 foot, one foot-thick mixed-media monument, weighing over a ton. Due to its unwieldy proportions and structural fragility, DeFeo was unable to find The Rose a home, and the painting languished in the basement of the San Francisco Institute of Art, entombed and forgotten, for over 25 years. In 1995, six years after DeFeo’s death, The Rose was bought and restored by the Whitney Museum and is now regarded as a seminal work of contemporary art.
