Lisette Oropesa is one of the outstanding lyric coloratura sopranos of her generation. In 2018, the music world was amazed: 11-year-old Christian Li presented himself in the final of the Yehudi Menuhin International Competition for Young Violinists as an outstanding virtuoso, mature interpreter, and charismatic ensemble leader. In addition to the first prize, he also secured two coveted special prizes and went down in the history of the famous competition as the youngest ever winner. Following his successful chamber music debut at the Rheingau Music Festival last year, we are delighted to present Christian Li's grand stage at the Kurhaus this season and welcome the up-and-coming violinist together with the Australian Youth Orchestra, which is considered an ambassador of musical excellence Down Under.

One of the astonishing facts of music history is that almost all of the great operas based on Goethe were written in France. Alongside Gounod's and Berlioz's Faust settings and Ambroise Thomas's MIGNON, Jules Massenet's WERTHER is the most prominent example in this series. Premiered in Vienna in 1892, the work is also one of Massenet's most successful operas and, in its expressive immediacy, a pinnacle of the "drame lyrique".

“So, you too, the famous Knight of the Rueful Countenance, did not escape the fate of all famous heroes of literature. And you undertook your own travels onto the stage!” wrote one critic who on 19 February 1910 attended the premiere of the opera Don Quichotte in Monte-Carlo. Strictly speaking, the cavalier of La Mancha had already “made it” onto the stage of the opera house, though never before with such triumph. To a great extent, Massenet’s last opera owes this triumph to one legendary performer of the title role – Fyodor Chaliapin. It was specifically for him that the opera was in fact written. And so Don Quichotte is that rare example of an opera for a basso cantante, a “singing bass”. In as much as the role of Sancho Panza is also performed by a low male voice and the role of the fair Dulcinée by a mezzo-soprano, the entire cast of protagonists here forms an ensemble that is unusual in terms of its colours.

The Greeley Philharmonic Orchestra joins forces with the University of Northern Colorado combined chorus to embark on an adventure across Europe. Experience wit, tragedy, and joy from Massenet’s Overture for the Greek tragedy Phèdre to Jacques Ibert’s honeymoon-inspired Ports of Call and Ravel’s only unaccompanied choral piece, Trois Chansons, a cleverly original collection of three fairy tale-like songs. The concert closes with Francis Poulenc’s Gloria, which is described as “borderline sacrilegious” for its mischievous setting of the Catholic Mass texts.

This season, works for horn can be enjoyed in the chamber concert of the hr Symphony Orchestra in Friedberg - all about hr solo horn player Marc Gruber in a recently modified program. He will be able to be heard in a duo with Beethoven and Glazunov and, as planned, in a sonorous and soulful trio with Brahms. Instead of the planned horn concerto by Ethel Smyth and the "Music with Horn" by Vagn Holmboe, Grace Kyung Eun Lee will also present three distinctive duos for violin and piano in the first part of the concert.

Long ago in 4th century Egypt, the monk Athanaël resolves to convert the seductive Thaïs to a life of piety. After first mocking his conversion attempt, she meditates and determines to follow him, rejecting the luxurious trappings of her former life. As Thaïs enters the convent and her new life, Athanaël recognizes that he loves her desperately—but it may be too late for them.

With an opulent set, shimmering costumes, and artists from Repertory Dance Theatre joining on stage, this lavish production is a feast for the senses.

Massanet’s beloved “Méditation” from his opera Thaïs, in a gorgeous arrangement for four cellos, opens this program. Albert Roussel’s Sérénade combines flute and harp with string trio for a work that is alternatingly haunting and lighthearted. The program concludes with Mozart’s jolly Wind Serenade for two oboes, two clarinets, two bassoons, and two horns. Composed to impress a potential patron, the elegant work has been delighting audiences for over 200 years!

Ostend was Europe’s leading seaside town in the late 19th century. A place where you could enjoy sun, sea and beach. Where one could parade among the beau monde. Where you could simultaneously listen and be seen at the Kursaal’s renowned concerts and recitals. They had the very greatest conductors and composers on the rostrum and the largest stars in classical music were visiting… and one James Sidney Edouard Ensor was in the loyal audience. The quirky painter was a loyal guest at the Théâtre Royale d’Ostende.
