Through music spanning the 1920s to today, the American Composers Orchestra explores the United States’ influence on the Weimar Republic, and, conversely, aspects of the Weimar legacy that resonate now in American culture. They perform Antheil’s Jazz Symphony, one of the first significant classical pieces influenced by jazz; short works by Duke Ellington, which caused a sensation during Sam Wooding and the Chocolate Kiddies’ 1925 tour of Berlin and Hamburg; and “My Ship” from Kurt Weill’s Lady in the Dark, with lyrics by Ira Gershwin. New works include a world premiere by Tonia Ko, co-commissioned by Carnegie Hall; a world premiere by John Glover, featuring mezzo-soprano Chrystal E. Williamsand accordionist Felipe Hostins; and the New York premiere of Clans from Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate’s Lowak Shoppala’.

Mezzo-soprano Sasha Cooke returns to Davies Symphony Hall for a program made up entirely of world premieres written by composers during the pandemic and dedicated specifically to Cooke. Together with pianist Kirill Kuzmin, Cooke shines a light on the hopes, fears, and observations of living through an unprecedented time, featuring the brightest compositional talents in music today.

Davies Symphony Hall

In September 2021, Eugene Opera presented Lucy, a monodrama composed for baritone and chamber ensemble by John Glover and Kelley Rourke. Lucy tells the story of psychologist Maurice Temerlin, who, along with his wife Jane, adopted a day-old chimpanzee in 1964. Their intention was to raise this chimpanzee as if she were their human child.

In the opera, as Temerlin struggles to hold on to memories of a happy family life, documentation from the experiment challenges him to come to terms with the project's ultimate consequences. In revealing the devastating effects of the experiment, the opera challenges audiences to consider the moral and ethical questions of animal research.

The Eugene Opera production featured baritone Andrew Wilkowske and Olivia Marie Jones and was directed by Jerry Mouawad.

Lucy

In the heyday of the seventies underground, Bobby DeSoto and Mary Whittaker – passionate, idealistic, and in love – design a series of radical protests against the Vietnam War. When one action goes wrong, the course of their lives is forever changed. The two must erase their past, forge new identities, and never see one another again.

Now it is the 1990s. Mary lives in the suburbs with her fifteen-year-old son, Jason, who spends hours immersed in the music of his mother’s generation. She has no idea where Bobby is, whether he is alive or dead. A few towns away, an aging hippie calling himself Nash presides over an anarchist bookstore, drawing the disaffected youth of the next generation into a shifting series of “groups” and “collectives.” Miranda, alone among the kids who frequent the bookstore, takes Nash seriously.
