Benjamin Britten's "The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra" offers a fascinating tour of the orchestra's sections and instruments, while Edward Elgar's "The Music Makers" includes quotes from his famous "Nimrod," creating a profound connection between the composer and the performers.

The world premiere of Nico Muhly’s new Baroque-inspired Piano Concerto is surrounded by three other unmissable and underrated works of time-hopping, genre-swapping proto-postmodernism: the cerebral mischief of Paul Hindemith’s raucous Ragtime, based on a theme by J.S. Bach; Edward Elgar’s inventive transcription of Bach’s Fantasia & Fugue in C minor; and Hindemith’s Symphony Mathis der Maler. The last takes a 16th-century artist’s struggles against repression as the basis for a majestic symphonic triptych.

Sister pianists Katia and Marielle Labèque are known for their deep artistic interpretations of everything from Mozart to Stravinsky and creative collaborations with composers that have “transformed the piano duo” (The New York Times). The Labèques bring two piano concertos they previously premiered by like-minded composers who are as at home in concert halls as they are in indie rock clubs: Nico Muhly and Bryce Dessner. Mojave Trio is dedicated to presenting a wide variety of classical music from the standard repertoire of the 18th-19th centuries to new works of our time and has performed throughout Southern California at LA County Museum of Art, Monk Space, Pomona, Occidental and Scripps Colleges, and have been heard on the “Sundays Live” radio broadcast from LACMA's Bing Theater. The Street is a new work by composer Nico Muhly and librettist Alice Goodman, performed by harpist Parker Ramsay who is joined by soprano Jennifer Ellis Kampani. The work reveals the brutality of a man’s wrongful condemnation and suffering as he confronts his friends, strangers and willing executioners on a street in Jerusalem. With narration by noted stage and screen actress Mia Barron this timely new work invites listeners to consider how everyday violence continues in our world today.

A world premiere ballet by Tiler Peck, a longtime principal dancer known for her astute sense of musicality, joins works from Resident Choreographer Justin Peck and Alexei Ratmansky, who joins the Company in an official capacity for the first time for the 2023-24 Season, as artist in residence. Peck’s Rotunda, with a commissioned score by the prominent American composer Nico Muhly, is infused with a sense of community and togetherness, while Ratmansky’s Odesa, danced to incidental music from the 1990 Russian movie Sunset, features an intriguing musical mix ranging from tango to klezmer, and nods to the movie’s roots in Isaac Babel’s tales of Jewish gangsters in the titular city.

Inspired by Fleming’s 2023 Grammy Award-winning album, Voice of Nature: the Anthropocene this special performance with pianist Gerald Martin Moore spans classical, romantic and contemporary music, exploring nature as both inspiration and victim of humanity. The National Geographic Society created an original video to reflect the musical selections.

From a glowing sunrise peeking out over the Alps to the pastoral sounds of sheep and a perilous storm on the summit, Richard Strauss takes listeners on a colorful musical journey up the mountain and down again. Conductor Emeritus Esa-Pekka Salonen guides the LA Phil as it scales An Alpine Symphony filled with drama and more than a few musical special effects. The remarkable Pekka Kuusisto performs Nico Muhly’s Shrink, a concerto composed for the Finnish violinist that takes its name from shrinking intervals around which the piece was constructed. NPR called Muhly’s innovative crafting “fresh and vital.”

America/Beautiful is a project by pianist and arts advocate Min Kwon, in which she has commissioned a diverse group of more than 70 of today’s leading American composers to each compose a variation on “America the Beautiful.”

Kwon's hope is to paint a sonic picture of her adopted country in all of its sprawling complexity, and ultimately try to find the beauty at the core of the American experiment and its credo of e pluribus unum (out of many, one).

THE PRIMAVERA PROJECT is an ongoing series of 81 commissions for cello, celebrating a rich tapestry of distinct and diverse compositional palettes. Each composer has been asked to respond to two paintings, Sandro Botticelli’s Primavera (c.1480) and Charline von Heyl’s Primavera 2020. This three-day residency at the Barge offers a curated survey divided into three thematic programs, featuring 17 works heard for the first time in NYC and world premieres by Tyshawn Sorey, Texu Kim, Layale Chaker, Analia Llugdar, and Aaron Jay Kernis. Works by Josquin des Prez and J.S. Bach offer a musical grounding through the centuries.

Musical storytelling joy is one of the characteristics of this evening's conductor, Finnish Pekka Kuusisto. In the evening's masterpiece  Mother Goose Tales, the French composer Maurice Ravel gives a new and resonant form to fairy tales by the author Charles Perrault, where figures such as Sleeping Beauty and Beauty and the Beast appear in Ravel's unmistakably glittering orchestral attire.

A program distinguished by its variety opens with Balanchine’s Divertimento from ‘Le Baiser de la Fée,’ choreographed to a Stravinsky symphonic suite. Kyle Abraham’s When We Fell was originally filmed and streamed during the pandemic, and here makes its live debut. Lynne Taylor-Corbett’s Chiaroscuro, a ballet for six dancers from 1994, evokes the artistic term of its title through the interaction of light and shadow as well as diverging tempos, while Alexei Ratmansky’s Odesa features three couples, their interplay infused with hints of drama, and a corps de ballet, and is set to incidental music from the Russian film Sketches to Sunset that alternates between the ruminative and the rambunctious.

In a performance inspired by her 2023 Grammy-Award winning album, experience the turbulence and resilience of Mother Nature's life as Renée Fleming performs music by Handel, Nico Muhly, Björk and Lord of The Rings' Howard Shore—all set against a backdrop of stunning film from the National Geographic Society.
