As the BSO continues to imagine a welcome spring after one of Minnesota’s frigid winters, we open the third concert of the season with Li Huanzhi’s Spring Festival Overture, a work that is becoming familiar to concertgoers across the world. Bright and colorful, it will set your heart in the right mood to welcome this year’s MNSOTA Mary West Solo Competition Grand Prize winner, whose performance will follow immediately afterward.

Rounding out our concert of sheer optimism will be the so-called “Italian” Symphony in A Major by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy. Originally conceived as “Blue Skies in A Major,” Mendelssohn’s Symphony No. 4 will warm your heart with joyous melodies and a singular aspect of composition that was unprecedented. What is it? Come and all will be revealed.

Join us for Pacific Symphony’s annual festivities honoring the Lunar New Year! Celebrating the Year of the Dragon, this performance is sure to sell out once again as audiences from across our communities come together to feast on a colorful presentation of Eastern and Western music and dance.

Lunar New Year is the most broadly observed holiday in Asian culture, and the Nashville Symphony’s inaugural Lunar New Year program will reflect how different communities and ethnic groups celebrate the occasion. Nashville Symphony Associate Conductor Nathan Aspinall will conduct the concert which marks the Year of the Dragon and features arrangements of traditional melodies and original music from Chinese composers He Zhanhou, Chen Gang, and Li Huanzhi; and Singaporean composers Phoon Yew Tien and Kelly Tang. Erhu virtuoso Ma Xiaohui, who performed with Yo-Yo Ma on the award-winning soundtrack of Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, will be the featured soloist, performing excerpts from He Zhanhao and Chen Gang’s The Butterfly Lovers Concerto and the traditional melody “Horse Racing.” In addition, Jen-Jen Lin, Director/Artistic Director of the Chinese Arts Alliance of Nashville, will create original choreography for Li Huanzhi’s Spring Festival Overture.  The concert culminates with Igor Stravinsky’s Suite from The Firebird, a classic symphonic concert work nodding to the Year of the Dragon by evoking a mythical, winged creature.
