This extraordinary evening, curated by the renowned composer Unsuk Chin, showcases an impressive lineup of Korean composers and artists who are at the forefront of shaping the global musical landscape.

The program features world premieres commissioned by the LA Phil, starting with Sunghyun Lee's new work for orchestra, followed by Kay Kyurim Rhie's New Song Cycle, and Texu Kim's Viola Concerto Ko-Oh, a revised work inspired by the Korean word for sleep, exploring the concept of sleep as both a daily occurrence and a metaphor for the final rest. These premieres highlight the innovative spirit and cultural richness of Korean music, blending traditional influences with contemporary sounds.

The evening also celebrates the remarkable talent of pianist Sunwook Kim, who, since winning the prestigious Leeds competition in 2006, has become known for his exquisite interpretations of Brahms. Kim will perform Brahms' Piano Concerto No. 1, a piece that has remained a staple in his repertoire, showcasing his sensitivity and profound musicality.

Conducted by Hankyeol Yoon and featuring performances by violist Yura Lee, this concert promises to be a memorable night of music that transcends borders and connects cultures. The presenter will discuss the evolution/expansion of his aesthetics/interests in the last decade through a handful of selected pieces, including Bounce!!, Sonata Amabile, Līlā, and more. He will also demonstrate how he interweaves various Western and Korean folk music styles and theories and his musical and life experiences into his composition.

Richard Goode, a Grammy award-winning American pianist acknowledged worldwide as one of today’s leading interpreters of classical music, joins the SPCO to perform and conduct two of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s renowned piano concertos, Nos. 18 and 23. Frequent SPCO collaborator Chia-Hsuan Lin will conduct the high-energy world premiere of Līlā written by Korean American composer Texu Kim — a new work for chamber orchestra inspired by Korean shamanistic dance traditions.

Richard Goode Plays Mozart’s Piano Concertos Nos. 18 and 23

This performance honors the 30th anniversary of Sejong Soloists, featuring four former concertmasters of the organization. Juliana Zara performs Unsuk Chin’s beguiling Puzzles and Games, which is drawn from her opera Alice in Wonderland. The program also features the world premiere of Texu Kim’s with/out, written expressly for this concert.

Alarm Will Sound is “one of the most vital and original ensembles on the American Music scene” (The New York Times), comprising 20 artists who are “not just extraordinary musicians, but also next-generation thinkers” (TimeOut New York). The ensemble is renowned for a visionary range of collaborations, and this concert marks the beginning of an extraordinary series curated by 2021 Pulitzer Prize winner, 2022 Kennedy Center honoree, and Carnegie Hall’s 2023–2024 Debs Composer’s Chair Tania León—a singular artist and longtime collaborator of the ensemble’s. Included in the program is León's Toque, inspired by the quintessential Cuban dance tune “Almendra.”

Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky had myriad emotions as he embarked on his fantastic Fifth Symphony, as did Arnold Schoenberg as he worked on Erwartung, writing that “It is impossible for a person to have only one sensation at a time...one has thousands simultaneously.” Join the Minnesota Orchestra and South Korean conductor Eun Sun Kim for an intimate journey of twists and turns, through anticipation, serendipity and, ultimately, fate—in a program that opens with a work by Minnesota Orchestra Composer Institute alumnus Texu Kim.

Music Director Rafael Payare and the Symphony celebrate the Orchestra’s return to Jacobs Music Center in a program that showcases the musicians and the exceptional new aural and visual experience of the venue. The kaleidoscopic program begins with Texu Kim’s new fanfare for Jacobs Music Center. The Symphony continues its exploration of Strauss’s epic tone poems with audience favorite Till Eulenspiegel’s Merry Pranks followed by a dazzling Billy Childs West Coast Premiere co-commissioned by the San Diego Symphony, with the charismatic style of soloist Steven Banks. The second half of the program explores Mozart’s festive Exsultate jubilate, where opera sensation Liv Redpath takes center stage, and concludes with the dreamy serenity of Debussy’s illustrious La mer.

THE PRIMAVERA PROJECT is an ongoing series of 81 commissions for cello, celebrating a rich tapestry of distinct and diverse compositional palettes. Each composer has been asked to respond to two paintings, Sandro Botticelli’s Primavera (c.1480) and Charline von Heyl’s Primavera 2020. This three-day residency at the Barge offers a curated survey divided into three thematic programs, featuring 17 works heard for the first time in NYC and world premieres by Tyshawn Sorey, Texu Kim, Layale Chaker, Analia Llugdar, and Aaron Jay Kernis. Works by Josquin des Prez and J.S. Bach offer a musical grounding through the centuries.
