After the resounding success of the Beethoven Ninth in 2022, the Memphis Symphony and the UM Choirs collaborate again on a presentation of Carmina Burana, a cantata written by Carl Orff. The composer based his work on 24 poems from the medieval collection Songs of Beuern. This work is a perennial favorite with modern audiences with its spectacular evocation of how fate and fortune impacts lives.

Opera Memphis is thrilled to present a majestic and sensual celebration of fortune with Carl Orff's "Carmina Burana." This captivating performance is set to take place on Saturday, October 28, 2023, at 7:30 pm, at the prestigious Cannon Center for the Performing Arts, located at 255 N Main St, Memphis, TN 38103. The performance will be conducted in Latin with English Surtitles, making it accessible to a wide audience.

Under the baton of Robert Moody, the event will feature a talented cast including soprano Sarah Vautour, countertenor Logan Tanner, and baritone Sidney Outlaw. They will be joined by the Memphis Symphony Chorus, with Lawrence Edwards as conductor, and the University of Mississippi University Choir, directed by Dr. Donald Trott. This collaboration highlights the partnership with the Memphis Symphony Orchestra, promising an evening of unparalleled musical excellence.

The program also includes Saint-Saëns' "Danse Macabre," setting the stage for Orff's "Carmina Burana." This piece is a setting of poems by 12th-century monks, exploring themes such as the fickleness of fortune, the joy of the return of spring, and the perils and pleasures of drinking, gluttony, gambling, and lust.

Join us for Opera Santa Barbara’s first mainstage baroque opera!  Santa Barbara native, Jana McIntyre (Norina, Don Pasuale ’21) sings the title role, who is in love with the God, Jupiter, sung by Robert Stahley making his Opera Santa Barbara debut. Also making their company debuts are countertenor Logan Tanner in the role of Athamas, Semele’s mortal betrothed, and mezzo soprano Sarah Coit, singing the goddess Juno, the spurned wife of Jupiter. Director Sara E. Widzer (Carmen in your Car, ’20) returns to bring the escapades and foibles of both mortals and Gods alike to the Lobero stage in this production set in the roaring 20’s. This production will feature lighting design by Helena Kuukka and projections designed by Yuki Izumihara. Rounding out our creative team, Maestra Emily Senturia leads the Opera Santa Barbara Orchestra through this journey of love, lust, jealousy, and revenge!
