The devil loves music—especially when a violin is involved. Some even whisper that he invented it himself! Tartini's Devil's Trill Sonata, Paganini's lightning-fast Caprices, Schnittke's ghostly A Paganini —that doesn't sound like a human hand... or does it? In this concert, there's plucking, bowing, trickery, and seduction—until even the devil is amazed.

The famous owner of the blue violin chose the subtitle "Old Style Concert" for his programme. He was inspired by the violinist Jan Kubelík and his famous recitals in Carnegie Hall at the beginning of the 20th century. Hence the emphasis on Paganini's highly virtuosic compositions.

Welcome to a carnivalesque evening full of lively rhythms and magnificent orchestration! The concert begins with Dvořák's sparkling Carnival Overture , followed by two lively overtures by Johann Strauss. He was not simply a violinist, not simply a composer: Niccolò Paganini was a phenomenon! “He was large, he contained multitudes,” one might say with Walt Whitman, the inspiration for the Camerata's 2025/26 season. The “devil's violinist” with his nimble, long fingers opened up previously unimagined technical dimensions for violin playing and completely redefined the concept of genius – with all the sensations and abysses that entails. In the third “Multitudes” concert of theHamburger CamerataUnder the motto "Storm," Sergey Malov now plunges into the cosmos of Paganini. He unleashes hurricane-like energy in Paganini's wildly virtuosic solo works, energy that then spills over into the more melodically conceived Second Violin Concerto – until finally the bells ring, giving the concerto its nickname "La Campanella" and the finale its widespread fame. Ludwig van Beethoven also stormed the stage with his Third Symphony, the "Eroica": The work in "heroic" E-flat major literally brought a breath of fresh air to the history of the symphony. From the very first bar, it practically compels the audience to listen attentively, to grasp the revolutionary messages of the music.

Ring in the New Year with the SFCO and the exuberant music of three ground-breaking composers. Louise Farrenc was a concert pianist and composer who fought for women’s rights and would become the only female professor at the famed Paris Conservatoire during the 19th century. Her Symphony in G Minor sizzles with energy and drama. Rarely has there been a virtuosic performer that forever changed the direction of their instrument’s technique, as completely as Niccolò Paganini. Paganini’s virtuosity was astounding - legends surrounding his persona were numerous as many speculated that he must have made a pact with the devil himself to have been granted such talent. His 1st violin concerto will be performed by the amazing 14-year-old violinist, Lisa Saito. Our program concludes with music by a composer who would change the trajectory of classical music itself. Ludwig van Beethoven was the embodiment of the Revolutionary Artist, creating a seismic shift in the power and emotional drama of our repertoire. The 7th Symphony is as joyful and exuberant as any piece he would write - an affirmation of life, and a perfect way to lift our spirits into the new year.

Erin Krasovich is a violinist from Milwaukee, Wisconsin who started playing in the Suzuki program at five years old. She is currently studying for her Bachelors of Music degree with Dr. Dawn Dongeun Wohn. In addition to her studies, she enjoys playing with the University of Wisconsin Symphony Orchestra and various chamber ensembles. Of these ensembles, she especially enjoys working on violin duo repertoire with her sister, Jane. She is also an Orchestral Librarian for the USO and other orchestral ensembles across campus.

Solo violin works continue Augustin Hadelich’s residency this season, culminating in J.S. Bach’s D minor Partita with the expressively and technically transcendent Chaconne — considered the “Everest” of violin performance. The Partita is balanced by music of Bach’s contemporary Georg Philipp Telemann, selections from Nicolò Paganini’s brilliant Caprices, and a Bach-inspired solo sonata from 1923 by the Belgian violinist Eugène Ysaÿe, the Sonata No. 5, from 1923. American composer Coleridge-Taylor Perkinson’s 1979 Blue/s Forms is a work championed by Hadelich in recital.

Chamber music in a small, exquisite format. This season's series opens with two string players: Schubert's Erlkönig-Lied, based on Goethe's nature-magical ballad, is performed here in a version for violin and viola – followed by a piece with a rare instrumentation: the violin virtuoso Niccolò Paganini once took a Rossini melody for variations, here actually played by the solo double bass. And after the Sarabande by the Norwegian Johan Halvorsen, we arrive at Beethoven, with his early third string trio for violin, viola, and cello. The D major work exudes nothing less than the atmosphere of a pure musical idyll. A salute from the end of the 18th century, a perfect concert finale.

“This program delves into the legends and myths of violin lore via the three-sided conversation between violin, violinist, and composer. We kick off this journey with a solo violin sonata composed by the namesake of the violin I now play, the Belgian virtuoso Eugène Ysaÿe. The Devil’s Trill Sonata is the virtuosic consequence of a Faustian pact between Tartini and his violin teacher—the devil himself. Franz Schubert gushed “I have heard an angel sing” after attending a sold-out performance in Vienna by Niccolò Paganini on his famed “Cannone” Guarneri del Gesù. The second half of the concert features more earthly pursuits in the form of two wedding gifts. César Franck dedicated his famed sonata to his longtime collaborator and friend Eugène Ysaÿe on his wedding day (you can’t miss the church bells in the finale). For my own nuptials last summer, my groomsman and musical best friend, composer Chris Rogerson, presented me with this Arietta.”

Those who frequent the KSO (indoors and out), know that all forms of jazz fit comfortably within the KSO’s wheelhouse. Stumbling upon intriguing jazz orchestrations of Bach, Mozart, Brahms, Dvorak, Gershwin, Holst, Suppe, Verdi, led James Cassidy to assemble an All-Star Big Band to end the 33rd season with a bang.

The concert opens with the jazz piano stylings of Eugen Cicero and his take on C.P.E. Bach’s Solfeggio in C minor. Consummate 1950s-60s arranger Billy May’s no-holds-barred approach to Hungarian Dance No. 5, Poet and Peasant Overture, Humoresque and others, paired with today’s big band guru Gordon Goodwin’s interpolations of the Two-part Invention in D minor, Symphony No. 40 in G minor and Rhapsody in Blue, and Jeremy Levy’s re-imagining of The Planets sets the stage for a veritable “hornucopia” of in your face classics à la jazz to close the KSO’s 33rd campaign.

The musicians of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra put the pedal to the floor in two bedazzling showpieces by Respighi. The Italian conductor Jader Bignamini makes his ASO debut after presenting these works at the Kennedy Center, driving the audience to their feet for multiple curtain calls. The ASO welcomes the Italian violin sensation Giuseppe Gibboni. Winner of the Paganini International Violin Competition, the Devil-may-care young fiddler performs (what else?) the Paganini Violin Concerto No. 1. Bignamini fans the flames with a concert opener by Bottesini.

The journey continues onward, bringing listeners to Italy – known for its expressive, emotional, and operatic classical music. Gioachino Rossini’s Overture to La gazza ladra depicts the opera’s primary character – a clever magpie – through its distinctive use of snare drum, and alludes to some of the opera’s more tragic aspects through minor, stormy-feeling sections. Paganini’s virtuosic Violin Concerto No. 2 in B minor utilizes bell-like effects, evoking the Italian folk song. The program concludes with Respighi’s glorious tone poems, which vividly depict various scenes and events throughout Rome.
