The evening will also showcase Tartini's "Sonata in G Minor for Violin and Continuo The Devil’s Trill," with Augustin Hadelich on violin, Inon Barnatan on harpsichord, and a to-be-announced cellist, adding a touch of eerie elegance. The journey continues onward, bringing listeners to Italy – known for its expressive, emotional, and operatic classical music. Gioachino Rossini’s Overture to La gazza ladra depicts the opera’s primary character – a clever magpie – through its distinctive use of snare drum, and alludes to some of the opera’s more tragic aspects through minor, stormy-feeling sections. Paganini’s virtuosic Violin Concerto No. 2 in B minor utilizes bell-like effects, evoking the Italian folk song. The program concludes with Respighi’s glorious tone poems, which vividly depict various scenes and events throughout Rome.

We are delighted to welcome guitarist JIJI, known for her virtuosity and command of diverse repertoire, to Tippet Rise for the first time. Performing outdoors on the land at the Domo by Ensamble Studio, JIJI’s program Counterpoint Dream, takes us on a musical journey in and out of several centuries including Baroque-period works by the 16th century nun Claudia Sessa, Marin Marais and J.S. Bach, Romantic virtuosos Niccolò Paganini and Isaac Albéniz, Haitian guitarist and composer Frantz Casseus, and American minimalist Steve Reich. The program also includes with works by Antón García-Abril – a special tribute to the great Catalan composer and father of Ensamble Studio’s principal architect of the same name, whose other-worldly structures, including the Domo, are integral to the Tippet Rise experience.

Cellist Nicholas Canellakis and pianist-composer Michael Brown have been hailed as “a pair of adventurous young talents” (Time Out New York) who “play with their antennae tuned to each other” (The Washington Post). Performing together throughout the world for more than a decade, they combine their unique talents to create a duo that combines masterpieces from the standard literature with original compositions and arrangements.  Canellakis and Brown are both artists with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center. They are guest curators for series around the country including the 2021 Music@Menlo Winter Focus Residency, and at Chamber Music Sedona, where Canellakis is the Artistic Director. Both maintain active solo careers, performing recitals and concertos each season. Canellakis, hailed as a “superb young soloist” (The New Yorker), made his Carnegie Hall Stern Auditorium debut as soloist with the American Symphony Orchestra. Brown, called a “young piano visionary,” is the recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and was a 2018 Emerging Artist of Lincoln Center. Brown is also a critically acclaimed composer who has written many works for Canellakis, and for such organizations as the Maryland and New Haven symphonies, the Gilmore International Keyboard Festival, and Poland’s NFM Leopoldinum Orchestra. Canellakis is also a filmmaker and actor. He and Brown produce and star in a comedy web series called “Conversations with Nick Canellakis,” in which they conduct satirical interviews with stars of the classical music world.

The musicians of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra put the pedal to the floor in two bedazzling showpieces by Respighi. The Italian conductor Jader Bignamini makes his ASO debut after presenting these works at the Kennedy Center, driving the audience to their feet for multiple curtain calls. The ASO welcomes the Italian violin sensation Giuseppe Gibboni. Winner of the Paganini International Violin Competition, the Devil-may-care young fiddler performs (what else?) the Paganini Violin Concerto No. 1. Bignamini fans the flames with a concert opener by Bottesini.

Consummate 1950s-60s arranger Billy May’s no-holds-barred approach to Hungarian Dance No. 5, Poet and Peasant Overture, Humoresque and others, paired with today’s big band guru Gordon Goodwin’s interpolations of the Two-part Invention in D minor, Symphony No. 40 in G minor and Rhapsody in Blue, and Jeremy Levy’s re-imagining of The Planets sets the stage for a veritable “hornucopia” of in your face classics à la jazz to close the KSO’s 33rd campaign.

In a unique presentation of the work, the four concertos, each of which famously represents a different season, will be interspersed with vibrant works by other celebrated Italian composers, enabling each season to be heard as a distinct work in its own right.
