Messiaen’s deeply held religious faith inspired music of great spirituality, which he captured in this early work — a meditation on sacramental offerings both given and received. Lili Boulanger’s poignant work came just before her tragic death at age 24 and feels full of foreboding. Debussy conjures every possible play of light on the seemingly infinite sea in all its moods. And we are thrilled to welcome the truly poetic Tabea Zimmermann for the first Seattle Symphony performances of Bartók’s Viola Concerto — in which he draws inspiration from Hungarian folk traditions.

With the passage of time, artists can disappear into obscurity while some emerge as immortal. The American George Crumb, who passed away in 2022, is undoubtedly in the pantheon of composers whose legacies are eternal. In this program, his cataclysmic Black Angels, a passionately anti-war statement for amplified string quartet, balances Olivier Messiaen’s Quatuor pour la fin du temps (Quartet for the End of Time), a devoutly spiritual, mystical work composed in a prisoner of war camp. And to open, J. S. Bach consecrates the concert hall with two of his most deeply felt, final works.

The composer and critic Virgil Thomson described Olivier Messiaen’s music as ‘convulsive, ecstatic, cataclysmic, terrifying and unreal’. All converge in the most vibrant and unignorable symphony of the 20th century: Messiaen’s Turangalîla Symphony. Nicholas Collon and the BBC Philharmonic perform a work that opens up the heavens even as it brings down the house, after the tantalising prospect of a world premiere by Anna Clyne. The Gorgeous Nothings, written specially for the Proms, is the composer’s response to the ‘spellbinding wordsmithery’ of American poet Emily Dickinson, scored for orchestra, amplified voices and real-time electronic processing.

Messiaen composed his masterpiece Quartet for the End of Time while imprisoned in a German POW camp. The unusual combination of instruments resulted from the players who were available to him. Both intimate and epic, the work is full of the bird songs which fascinated the composer throughout his life, and also expresses the depth of his faith under the most trying of circumstances.

French composer Olivier Messiaen was famously synesthetic, “hearing” colors as harmony and seeing colors in sound. The Turangalîla-symphonie summed up the composer’s passions for nature, birdsong, Catholicism, Eastern philosophy, music, and romantic love as embodied in the legend of Tristan and Isolde; in this concert, Andris Nelsons leads this work that the BSO premiered in 1949 under Leonard Bernstein’s baton. The brilliant Yuja Wang takes on the work’s hefty piano part and Cécile Lartigau performs on the ondes Martenot, an early electronic instrument. Turangalîla was commissioned by Serge Koussevitzky.

Jan Lisiecki performs a program of preludes in his Carnegie Hall recital debut, treating audiences to dozens of succinct, characterful works by Chopin, J. S. Bach, Rachmaninoff, Szymanowski, Messiaen, and Górecki. This musical tradition is masterfully exemplified by Chopin’s Twenty-Four Preludes, which comprises the second half of the recital. Inspired by his visits to Utah's Bryce Canyon and Zion National Park, Messiaen's Des canyons aux étoiles ("From the Canyons to the Stars") depicts the birdsong and red rock hues he experienced during his time in the desert. Messiaen – who was also synesthetic – heard colors and saw sounds. Accompanied by immersive video-art, Springer Auditorium will be transformed, allowing listeners to escape into the southwestern landscape and experience a synesthesia of their own.

Estonian composer Arvo Pärt was the most-performed living composer in the world for nine of the years between 2011 and 2022 (and the second-most-performed living composer in 2019, losing top honors to John Williams). In 1976, he developed a new style of composition he referred to as tintinnabuli (“bells” in Latin), which has also been described as spiritual minimalism. Pärt suggests the need to “concentrate on each sound, so that every blade of grass is as important as a flower.”

The expressive splendor that Messiaen drew from his religious mysticism and devotion to nature is on full display in his epic 12-movement work From the Canyons to the Stars. In one of our most powerful musical offerings of the season, conductor Alan Gilbert leads a star-studded performance that features an ensemble of 40 musicians and four soloists: pianist Kirill Gerstein, Berlin Philharmonic Principal Horn Stefan Dohr, New York Philharmonic Associate Principal Percussionist Daniel Druckman, and Metropolitan Opera Principal Percussionist Gregory Zuber. The remarkable work—inspired by the landscape of southwestern Utah—was written in celebration of the bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence, and we offer it here, in celebration of our 50th season.

Critically acclaimed Chickasaw composer and pianist Jerod Impichchaachaaha’ Tate explores the intersection of classical and Indigenous musical cultures through his compositions, and the title of this astounding piece for solo timpani comes from the Chickasaw word for thunder and lighting. Throughout history, the Chickasaw people believed thunderstorms were the holy people at war above the clouds. Defying death and displaying courage, these warriors would shoot their guns into the sky during the storms. Talowa’ Hiloha (Thunder Song) is an homage to this tradition.

A selection of fin-de-siècle and early 20th-century French music for violin and piano, with readings of poetry by the French Symbolists whose works had a resounding influence on the musical circles of their time.

American violinist Kevin Zhu has amassed an outstanding record of concert performances and competition wins since he began playing violin at age three. Praised for his “awesome technical command and maturity” (The Strad) and “absolute virtuosity, almost blinding in its incredible purity” (L’ape musicale), Kevin regularly performs on the world’s largest stages, ranging from Carnegie Hall in New York to London’s Royal Festival Hall to the Forbidden City Concert Hall in Beijing. Initially coming to international attention after winning the 2018 Paganini Competition and 2012 Yehudi Menuhin Competition, he has established himself as a leading figure among the next generation of musicians, astonishing audiences with his peerless technical mastery and inimitable artistic voice.

The Orchestra Now wraps up its eighth season of free concerts with a performance at Symphony Space. Resident Conductor Zachary Schwartzman leads the orchestra in a program that includes Messiaen’s sentimental and spiritual song cycle "Poèmes pour Mi," Dukas’ ever-popular symphonic poem "The Sorcerer’s Apprentice," and Rimsky-Korsakov’s masterful "Scheherazade."

AMOC*’s production of HARAWI realizes Olivier Messiaen’s deeply affecting, hour-long song cycle for voice and piano in new physical and dramatic dimensions, featuring soprano Julia Bullock, pianist Conor Hanick, choreographer/dancers Bobbi Jene Smith and Or Schraiber, with direction by Zack Winokur. Moving from duet to quartet, this production breaks open Messiaen’s cycle, connects movement to music, and grapples with the intensity of love and loss.

Graduation recitals display the skill and passion of Curtis Institute of Music students on the cusp of professional musicianship. Members of the current class will share the breadth of their talent through a culminating graduation recital. Admission requires advance registration and is complimentary.

‘I have always admired St Francis…he spoke to the birds, and I’m an ornithologist.’ For the dazzling, colourful score to his gargantuan opera based on the life of the saint, bird-lover Olivier Messiaen interweaves orchestral twitterings and chirpings into a tapestry of sound as glorious as the dawn chorus. Here’s a very rare chance to experience part of this extraordinary work with the BBC SSO’s Chief Conductor, Ryan Wigglesworth, at the helm.

Maya Norman is a horn player based in Pittsburgh, PA and is currently in the second year of her masters degree here at Carnegie Mellon University, studying horn performance. In 2018 she graduated from University of the Pacific, and spent the years before starting graduate school building up a private studio of students and freelancing in the greater California bay area. She is a student of Stephen Kostyniak, and has frequently studied with other PSO members during her time here in Pittsburgh including Robert Lauver and William Caballero.

“Song of love, hymn to joy, time, movement, rhythm, life and death.” So Messiaen described his Turangalîla-symphonie — an extravagant, ecstatic piece that seeks and celebrates humanity’s place in the natural and the spiritual realms. Featuring pianist Jean-Yves Thibaudet and ondes martenot soloist Cynthia Millar.

The Bacchetto / Sabey Duo is a collaborative project of San Francisco-based composer-performers Nick Bacchetto and Ben Sabey. The duo creates new works for piano and live electronics using MIDI Polyphonic Expression instruments controlling analog modular synthesis, which is spatialized into any speaker configuration via the new Dolby Atmos renderer.
