A program distinguished by its variety opens with Balanchine’s Divertimento from ‘Le Baiser de la Fée,’ choreographed to a Stravinsky symphonic suite. Kyle Abraham’s When We Fell was originally filmed and streamed during the pandemic, and here makes its live debut. Lynne Taylor-Corbett’s Chiaroscuro, a ballet for six dancers from 1994, evokes the artistic term of its title through the interaction of light and shadow as well as diverging tempos, while Alexei Ratmansky’s Odesa features three couples, their interplay infused with hints of drama, and a corps de ballet, and is set to incidental music from the Russian film Sketches to Sunset that alternates between the ruminative and the rambunctious.

The celebrated contemporary dance company, A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, brings thought-provoking movement rooted in Black and queer history and culture to the forefront under Abraham’s visionary leadership. This compelling program features new works by Princess Grace Award recipients Andrea Miller and Rena Butler, alongside creations by Paul Singh and Artistic Director Kyle Abraham. Miller’s YEAR reflects on presence and identity in the digital age, while Butler’s Shell of A Shell of The Shell delves into self-exploration amid cultural pressures.

New York City Ballet continually invests in works by new generations of choreographers. Pam Tanowitz’s Law of Mosaics, set to Ted Hearne’s score, combines moments of resonant silence with propulsive string-based music, and is further illuminated by the colorful costumes of Reid Bartelme and Harriet Jung. Despite its simplicity, This Bitter Earth, a pas de deux danced to a remix of Dinah Washington’s recording of the title song, ranks among Christopher Wheeldon’s most delicate and moving works. For many followers of the Company, William Forsythe’s Herman Schmerman Pas de Deux remains a totemic example of the adventurousness that Balanchine always championed and exemplified. The Company’s ongoing interest in a wide variety of music and the dancing it inspires is illustrated in Kyle Abraham’s Love Letter (on shuffle), which draws on the pop music of singer-songwriter James Blake and combines classical steps with a distinctly 21st-century aesthetic.

MacArthur Fellow Kyle Abraham is one of the most sought after choreographers and dancers of our time, creating a unique and expressive style of dance that explores issues of identity, history, and geography. In addition to performing and developing new works for his company A.I.M by Kyle Abraham, the bold creator has been commissioned by a variety of dance companies including New York City Ballet, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater, Paul Taylor American Modern Dance, Hubbard Street Dance Chicago, The Royal Ballet, and The National Ballet of Cuba. He has also choreographed for many of the leading dancers of our time, including Misty Copeland, Calvin Royal III, and Wendy Whelan. He unleashes his signature style—a unique blend of modern dance techniques ranging from ballet to hip hop—in the world premiere of a new evening-length work.

Celebrated contemporary dance company A.I.M by Kyle Abraham returns in an evening of stunning repertoire that includes choreographer Bebe Miller’s legendary solo “Rain,” new work by Paul Singh, and A.I.M Artistic Director Kyle Abraham’s new works: “MotorRover,” “5 Minute Dance (You Drivin’?),” and “If We Were a Love Song,” an intimate exploration of love set to six songs by Nina Simone.

“Lush movement, infectious music and magnetic dancers” (New York Times) in an enticing program A.I.M by Kyle Abraham brings a unique program to UC San Diego that ranges from the bold to the sensual to playful. The program includes Big Rings choreographed by A.I.M company member and Dance magazine’s “25 to Watch”, Keerati Jinakunwiphat. This powerful, yet fun, work is a celebration of the unique style and camaraderie of this dynamic dance tribe, as well as an ode to her hometown Chicago. Also featured is Our Indigo: If We Were a Love Song, a series of poetic vignettes that explore the intimacy, intricacies, and vulnerabilities of Black Love set to the songs of Nina Simone. The film adaptation of this work has been nominated for a 2023 NY Emmy. This flavorful gumbo of cultural expression is one you won’t want to miss.

In Requiem: Fire in the Air of the Earth, a new work co-commissioned by Celebrity Series, Kyle Abraham poignantly reimagines Mozart’s Requiem. This collaboration unites electronic music pioneer Jlin’s extraordinary sense of rhythm with Abraham’s deep grounding in classical ballet, hip-hop, modern dance, and street dance for a powerful and unforgettable experience.

Calderwood Studio at GBH

A beloved Balanchine favorite joins two world premieres and a solo dance by Justin Peck on this program honoring the Company’s storied past while looking to the future. Originally created for the Paris Opera Ballet in 1947, Symphony in C, set to Bizet’s ebullient composition of the title, is among the most celebrated ballets of the 20th Century. Created in 2021 for the Company’s virtual Spring Gala, Peck’s Solo, a collaboration with Principal Dancer Anthony Huxley, makes its live stage debut. Completing the program are new dances by Gianna Reisen, who was the youngest choreographer in the Company’s history when she made her debut with Composer’s Holiday in 2017, and Kyle Abraham, whose first ballet for the Company, The Runaway, electrified audiences at its premiere in 2018.
