This special event, held at 150 Convent Avenue, New York, marks a significant milestone in the history of Harlem Stage, celebrating the conclusion of its 40th Anniversary Season.

For 25 years, the signature dance series E-Moves has been a platform for showcasing the incredible talents of artists of color in the realm of movement-based creations. This year, in honor of Harlem Stage's 40th anniversary, we are thrilled to welcome back some of the most influential artists who have contributed to the legacy of our dance programming. These include the likes of Ronald K. Brown, nora chipaumire, and Bill T. Jones, among others.

The evening will be curated by celebrated director and choreographer Camille A. Brown, who first presented in E-Moves in 2004. Brown has assembled an inspiring lineup of associate choreographers from her theater and commercial work, all of whom are forging their own paths in dance. The program will feature works by Chloe Davis, Juel D. Lane, Mayte Natalio, Rickey Tripp, and Maleek Washington, centered around the theme of BLACK JOY.

In addition to these performances, Camille A. Brown will present "TURF," featuring her acclaimed company, Camille A. Brown & Dancers, in a tour de force that has garnered attention from The New York Times and dance enthusiasts worldwide.

This event is supported by the Mellon Foundation, Mertz-Gilmore Foundation, and Harkness Foundation for Dance, ensuring an evening of unparalleled artistic expression and celebration. Seating is reserved, and additional performances will be held on Saturday, June 15, at 7:30 PM.

For 65 years, Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater has showcased the work of diverse choreographers, amplifying a wide range of voices alongside Mr. Ailey’s own. During this milestone anniversary season, City Center’s Principal Dance Company will expand on that tradition, introducing Amy Hall Garner and Elizabeth Roxas-Dobrish to the repertory with world premieres CENTURY and Me, Myself and You, which is commissioned by City Center.

Join us for a captivating evening of dance as Harlem Stage proudly presents "E-Moves: Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE," a highlight of our 40th Anniversary Season. This sold-out event is set to take place on Saturday, October 14, 2023, from 7:30 PM to 9:30 PM at the esteemed Harlem Stage, located at 150 Convent Avenue, New York.

For over 25 years, Harlem Stage's signature dance series, E-Moves, has been a platform for showcasing the incredible talents of artists of color, blending movement-based creations that span across a spectrum of styles and narratives. This year, in celebration of our 40th anniversary, we are honored to welcome back Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE, a company that has played a pivotal role in the legacy of our dance programming.

Founded in 1985 and based in Brooklyn, Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE is renowned for its unique fusion of traditional African, Afro-Cuban, and contemporary choreography, enriched with spoken word. The company first graced our stage in 1998 and returns with a performance that promises to be unforgettable, featuring dances that embody the essence of Brown's choreography—otherworldly, charged, and fervently expressive.

The evening will feature a special reprise of "Palo y Machete," an excerpt from the evening-length work "One Shot," originally choreographed for EVIDENCE Associate Artistic Director Arcell Cabuag. This piece pays homage to the legendary photographer Charles "Teenie" Harris, capturing the essence of his one-click photography. Additionally, the program includes "March," a duet set to a speech by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., and "Upside Down," an ensemble work that speaks to the importance of community and the destiny of the soul.

In line with our season's theme, "Looking Back to Create Forward," Ronald K. Brown invites emerging choreographer Joya Powell to present her work. Powell, a multiethnic Harlemite and Bessie Award-winning choreographer, will showcase "Hair Ties," a multidisciplinary dance-theater piece inspired by America’s fear of Black power and beauty, celebrating Black creativity and resilience.

Following the performance, attendees will have the opportunity to engage in a "Talk Back" session with childhood friends and now colleagues, Carl Hancock Rux and Ronald K. Brown, discussing the emergence of Brown’s EVIDENCE Dance Company and the influence of African diasporic movement and modern dance in Brown's choreography.

Founded in 1985 and based in Brooklyn, Ronald K. Brown/EVIDENCE seamlessly melds traditional African and Afro-Cuban dance with contemporary choreography and spoken word. The company returns for its home season at The Joyce with Walking Out the Dark (2001), a hauntingly beautiful quartet mirroring conversations amongst family, friends, and lovers. The program will also feature Torch (2012), a work created as a celebration of perseverance and self-determination, set to the music of various artists including DJ Zinhle. With a prolific career spanning almost 40 years, "Brown is one of a handful of choreographers rethinking what dance can do” (The New York Times).
