An enchanted tale that has delighted generations. The first masterpiece of a musical genius. Music Director Andreas Delfs brings the season to a roaring close with Stravinsky’s showpiece, The Firebird. Simon Trpčeski performs Rachmaninov’s rapturous First Piano Concerto. The Times of London was astonished: “Trpčeski looks set to dominate the piano world for a long time to come.” Right from the start, the rhythms of John Mackey’s Redline Tango seduce.

Concluding their performances for the 2024 – 2025 academic year, the LSU Symphonic Band presents a heartfelt program titled “…with a simple love”. The evening begins with the lively and spirited Lola Flores, a paso doble by Terig Tucci, followed by John Mackey's deeply reflective Sheltering Sky. The first half concludes with a vibrant suite from Leonard Bernstein's eclectic and genre-blending Mass. The program reaches its emotional culmination with David Maslanka's powerful and transcendent work, Give Us This Day.

The California Youth Symphony will present its annual Holiday Concert on December 1st, 2024.  The Associate and Senior Orchestras, conducted by Leo Eylar, and the CYS Wind Symphony, conducted by Pete Nowlen, will present the annual Holiday Concert at San Mateo Performing Arts Center. Once again the orchestras and Wind Symphony will offer the audience a pleasing mix of classical and holiday favorites. Highlights include selections from Aaron Copland’s 1942 ballet Rodeo, known for its lively, folk-inspired music of the American Wild West, as well as orchestral works by Wagner, Vaughan-Williams, and Mozart’s beloved Magic Flute Overture. The Wind Symphony will feature works by Travassos, Mackey, Molookpour, and Michael Brown’s Pixar Movie Magic. A special treat features our combined percussion sections in a performance of Nathan Daughtrey’s mesmerizing Sea of Tranquility, conducted by CYS Percussion Director Artie Storch. Admission is free, and no advanced ticket reservations are required!

Spanning a diverse palette of musical styles and genres, from ancient to now, John Mackey's seminal 2014 work "Wine-Dark Sea" take its title and structure from Homer's "Odyssey", with each of the three movements an ancapsulation of the pivotal moments of Odysseus' travels.

The program includes Leonard Bernstein's "Profanation" from the Jeremiah Symphony and "Make Our Garden Grow," Tschesnokoff's "Salvation is Created" arranged by Houseknecht, Aaron Copland's "The Promise of Living," and the eponymous "Frozen Cathedral" by John Mackey.

Adding to the splendor of the occasion, the performance will also feature Jonathan Emmons and the Centenary United Methodist Church Choir, bringing together instrumental and vocal elements to create a truly unforgettable auditory experience.

As we celebrate the holidays with family and friends, our hearts go out to those in need. Join SJWS for an uplifting concert of seasonal works, from the sacred to the secular to the Festival of Lights. The concert features a variety of holiday-themed music by composers Leroy Anderson, Morton Gould, Julie Giroux and Samuel Coleridge-Taylor, as well as Michael Daugherty’s ethereal Winter Dreams.  The concert concludes with a special tenth-anniversary performance of John Mackey’s The Frozen Cathedral.

The Carnegie Mellon Wind Ensemble utilizes a flexible instrumentation of winds, brass, and percussion to perform repertoire from standard concert band works to contemporary compositions of various instrumental combinations. 

Known for injecting music and fun into the air for unsuspecting passersby by appearing in nontraditional venues such as grocery stores, bars, and other public places, the Sinta Quartet has also performed in formal venues including Carnegie Hall, Walt Disney Hall, and the Beijing Center for the Performing Arts. With these Music Box performances, they combine the best of both worlds, offering a program of short works packed with energetic brio, running the gamut from the mid-20th century to Irish reels, with stops for minimalism, bluegrass—even a Hungarian barn dance—along the way.
