A veritable feast of Baroque gems opens the Chamber Soirée season. Ceremonial brass set the stage for J.S. Bach’s festive Brandenburg Concerto No. 3 for strings. The percussion have their moment with Philador’s March for Two Pairs of Timpani, which was first performed for King Louis XIV in 1683. Igor Stravinsky's glorious Neo-Baroque Pulcinella Suite concludes this royal banquet.

Join us for a memorable evening as the Symphonic Wind Ensemble presents its final concert of the academic year on Sunday, May 26, 2024, at 5:00pm CDT, at the prestigious Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. This special performance celebrates the illustrious career and musical leadership of conductor Mallory Thompson, who is retiring from her Director of Bands position after 28 years of dedicated service at Northwestern University.

The evening's program is a tribute to Thompson's mentorship and artistry, opening with her arrangement of the Prelude to Act III, Dance, and Finale from Wagner’s "Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg," dedicated to her teacher and mentor Donald Hunsberger. The concert will also feature a selection of wind ensemble favorites, including Ben Horne's "Deep River," J.S. Bach's "Toccata and Fugue in D Minor" arranged by Donald Hunsberger, and culminating with David Maslanka’s monumental "Symphony No. 4."

Tickets are priced at $8 for the general public and $5 for students with valid ID. This event promises to be a profound celebration of Thompson's contributions to the Northwestern University music community and a showcase of the ensemble's exceptional talent.

Join us for an enchanting evening of music with the Symphonic Band's second winter-quarter performance on Friday, March 8, 2024, at 7:30pm CST at the prestigious Pick-Staiger Concert Hall. Under the baton of Shawn Vondran, this concert promises a journey through a diverse musical landscape, beginning with Charles Ives's "Variations on America," a witty rendition that infuses the patriotic tune with unexpected harmonies and playful rhythms.

The night continues with Roshanne Etezady's "Against the Rain," a poignant piece inspired by Edna St. Vincent Millay's poem "Love Is Not All," exploring the depths of love's sacrifices and sufferings. The first half concludes with David Maslanka's "Traveler," a reflection on life's adventures, moving from vibrant energy to serene contemplation.

The second half is dedicated to Zhou Tian's "Sinfonia," a 2022 composition drawing inspiration from a rich tapestry of cultural influences, including 1940s and '50s noir films, the bustling New York City subway, Shanghai's Mid-Autumn Festival, and the historic completion of the US's first transcontinental railroad in 1869.

Maslanka has written of his 4th Symphony: “The central driving force is the spontaneous rise of the impulse to shout for the joy of life.” This musical celebration will be paired with a brand new commission by Joel Thompson (Seven Last Words of the Unarmed, performed by the TSO in March 2019) that commemorates the historic Tallahassee Bus Boycott. We look forward to, once again, partnering with the FAMU Concert Choir!
