From Venice to Vienna, London to North Germany, this concert traces the fantastical style throughout the 17th century, featuring composers such as Castello, Bertali, Schmelzer, Biber, Locke, Purcell, Froberger, and Weckmann. Here, the Baroque is at its boldest and most vibrant: music that dares to push boundaries, sometimes even crossing them, yet still has the power to astonish, move, and enchant.

concert together with our solo trumpeter, Manuel Mischel, and our solo trombonist, Philippe Stier. The sonata by the Venetian composer Dario Castello, born in 1602, offers an enormous range of emotions. In Widor's organ symphony from 1878, a vast array of stops are pulled out around a chorale-like theme, creating a brilliant sonic experience. Berio's "Sequenza" from 1966 explicitly prescribes elements of theatrical performance, including conscious breathing and vocal technique. The two organ movements, published only after Mendelssohn's death, were combined into a single sonata in 1993 with a new instrumentation – and represent a compelling musical experiment.

And there was light: By the end of the 16th century at the latest, affect had become an indispensable component of music. Stylus luxurians – "luminous style" – is what music theorist and composer Christoph Bernhard calls this creative device, which was also prevalent in the Baroque period and is characterized by theatricality and intense emotional expression. The Ensemble Astrum researches, experiments, and creates. In their program "And there was light ," the trio of artists led by award-winning Salzburg recorder player Felix Gutschi and Dutch soprano Noëlle Drost dedicate themselves to the stylus luxurians and take the audience on an emotionally profound journey through the Renaissance, Baroque, and early Classical periods.

A Baroque Concert by the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt
Why is the Neue Philharmonie Frankfurt Germany's most successful crossover orchestra? Because of its musicians, who enjoy everything, who are always open-minded, and who shy away from nothing – not even Baroque music! If you look closely,
you'll discover the word "rock" in the word "baroque" – thus dusting off the image of this era with the diversity of Baroque art music: Italy's Dario Castello, France's Jean-Marie Leclair, and the two Germans Georg Friedrich Handel and Georg Philipp Telemann demonstrate with
their works what 17th and 18th century Europe had to offer in terms of variety and diverse musical styles. The evening is given an additional fresh splash of color by two dreamy arias that give the program its title.

"A kind of speech in music" Lars Ulrik Mortensen calls the stylus phantasticus and emphasizes that this music must be played "so that it can surprise or shock and take the audience on a journey," and that its performance must and must "go all the way to - and momentarily over – the edge.” The evening's program provides such lavish examples of the free fabulist of the time that it gives the term "baroque music" completely new dimensions.

This program will explore the structure of operatic arias as antecedent to the Italian instrumental forms. Works for voice and harp by Claudio Monteverdi and sonatas by Dario Castello for violin and harp will explore opposites. We most deeply appreciate the standard sonata form’s storytelling structure by comparison to its structural opposite, the wildly unstructured stylus fantasticus.

“En slags tale i musik” kalder Lars Ulrik Mortensen stylus phantasticus og understreger, at denne musik må spilles “så den kan overraske eller chokere og tage publikum med på en rejse,” og at dens udførelse må og skal “gå helt ud til – og momentvis over – kanten.” Aftenens program giver så overdådige eksempler på datidens frie fabuleren, at det giver begrebet “barokmusik” helt nye dimensioner.

The Royall Consort of King Charles I was at the cutting edge of 17th century music, and today it lives again with Academy of Ancient Music.
King Charles I was a connoisseur of the visual arts, but he had exquisite taste in music, too, and the brilliant young composer and courtier William Lawes flooded the Stuart court with some of Britain’s – and Europe’s – most innovative (and ravishing) sounds.
