The Chineke! Orchestra, whose motto is “championing change and celebrating diversity in classical music,” is one of Britain’s most exciting new orchestras. It was founded in London in 2015 by double bassist Chi-chi Nwanoku CBE to provide career opportunities at the highest level for Black and ethnically diverse classical musicians in the UK and Europe. They are currently a Resident Orchestra at London’s Southbank Centre, and their 2023 BBC Proms concert at the Royal Albert Hall featured musicians from 40 different countries. They have performed to great critical acclaim at leading European festivals such as the Lucerne and Edinburgh Festivals, as well as in the US and Canada. Zimbabwean-born conductor Vimbayi Kaziboni, Assistant Professor of Orchestral Studies and Contemporary Music at Boston Conservatory at Berklee, is widely sought after by top orchestras around the globe for his depth of approach, interpretive imagination, and expressivity. For its Santa Barbara debut, the Chineke! Orchestra presents an evening of compelling works by Black composers, and Franz Joseph Haydn’s Trumpet Concerto in E-flat featuring Aaron Azunda Akugbo, a founding member of Connaught Brass.

And Mozart’s sublime 22nd Piano Concerto strikes a balance between storms and blue skies, with Jan Lisiecki back on our stage by popular demand.

Join us for an enchanting afternoon of oboe music featuring Cedar Turner, a talented Bachelor of Music student under the tutelage of Robert Morgan. This recital is set to take place on Sunday, May 12, 2024, at 2:30pm CDT in the Regenstein Master Class Room at the Bienen School of Music, Northwestern University.

Cedar Turner will be performing an exquisite selection of pieces, showcasing the versatility and beauty of the oboe. The program includes Brian Raphael Nabors' Sonata for Oboe and Piano, Ruth Crawford-Seeger's Diaphonic Suite No. 1, Alyssa Morris' Shine, and Claude Arrieu's Suite en quatre, arranged by Louise-Marie Simon. Accompanying Cedar on this musical journey will be Haylie Wu on flute, Mingyao Liu on clarinet, Justice Gardner on bassoon, Blake Parker on vibraphone, and Kay Kim on piano.

This event is free and open to the public, with no tickets required. For those unable to attend in person, a live stream will be available, ensuring you don't miss out on this remarkable performance. Dvořák’s Ninth Symphony, “From the New World,”blends the traditional folk sounds of the composer’s Czech homeland with melodic influences discovered in African American and Native American music – tunes Dvořák first heard in his “new world,” the United States. Conductor Joseph Young makes his MSO debut in this dynamic program. Barber’s Violin Concerto, now an audience favorite, was once considered too difficult to be played; violinist Alexi Kenney wields “his architect’s eye for structure and space and a tone that ranges from the achingly fragile to full-bodied robustness” (The New York Times).

It should not come as a surprise by now that Yaniv likes to provide our audiences with memorable listening experiences. In this concert, he offers us many contrasts – in other words, three pieces of music that couldn’t be more different from one another!  We begin with an upbeat rhythmic jaunt in Pulse for Orchestra by American composer Brian Raphael Nabors. Then we switch to the witty and even prickly music of Prokofiev’s delicious The Love for Three Oranges.

Augustin Hadelich, a violinist whose rhapsodic expressiveness has gained worldwide attention, solos in not one but two works for violin and orchestra. Stravinsky’s concerto blends neoclassical clarity and proportion with rich, playful textures. Violin Concerto in A major, Op. 5, No. 2 by Joseph Bologne, Chevalier de Saint-Georges, is a delicate work by a contemporary of Mozart and Haydn. JoAnn Falletta also conducts a new piece by Brian Raphael Nabors, as well as Kodály’s work infused with the sounds of Central European folk music.
