**About the Elias String Quartet:**
The Elias String Quartet, named after Mendelssohn’s oratorio "Elijah" (Elias in German), is renowned for their intense and vibrant performances. Formed in 1998 at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, they have studied with the Alban Berg quartet in Cologne and were the resident String Quartet at Sheffield’s Music in the Round as part of Ensemble 360 from 2005 to 2009. They are currently the ensemble in residence at the RNCM, where they continue to teach and perform.

Receiving rapturous reviews for their complete Beethoven series at Wigmore Hall, both live and on disc, and a separate Mendelssohn series, the Elias players turn their attention to Mozart, in whose music they are joined by another leading musician for two of the string quintets. Sally Beamish’s piece took as its starting point the idea of the evening meeting or Epilogue which ends many Quaker events.

The intense, vibrant Elias Quartet returns to the DACAMERA stage for one night only following their historic Beethoven string quartet cycle in 2022 – and this time they’re joined by a friend.  Artistic Director Sarah Rothenberg joins the quartet for Brahms’ majestic Piano Quintet, in which the composer’s own beloved instrument takes center stage. We kick off our celebration of composer Fanny Mendelssohn with her rhapsodic Quartet in E-flat Major, one of the first surviving string quartets by a woman. Stravinsky’s rarely-performed miniatures, Three Pieces for String Quartet, open the program.

The Elias String Quartet marks Sally Beamish’s 70th birthday year with a performance of two of the three quartets the group commissioned from her, each of which takes one of Robert Schumann’s string quartets as its point of creative departure. Its programme also includes a sequence of folk songs arranged by Donald Grant, Elias Quartet violinist and a master of the Scottish fiddle tradition.
