Joshua Redman is one of the most acclaimed and charismatic jazz artists working today. Joshua was born in Berkeley, California, and he is the son of legendary saxophonist Dewey Redman and dancer Renee Shedroff. He was exposed at an early age to a variety of music (jazz, classical, rock, soul, Indian, Indonesian, Middle-Eastern, African). Also, a wide range of instruments (recorder, piano, guitar, gatham, gamelan). Then, Redman began playing clarinet at age nine before switching to the tenor saxophone one year later.

Originally hailing from Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Lenard Simpson’s well-earned reputation as “quickly becoming one of the most important saxophonists of this generation” (Kiefer) has secured him a spot as a rising star among his contemporaries. From his early days in Milwaukee as a self-taught beginner, to formal studies at Northern Illinois University (B.M., jazz performance) and UCLA’s Herbie Hancock Institute (M.M., music performance jazz), Simpson’s natural ability and outstanding musicianship have been recognized by some of the most celebrated jazz musicians and pedagogues across the world, including Herbie Handcock, Christian McBride, Wayne Shorter, and many more.

A gifted and award-winning vibraphonist, composer, and producer, San Francisco native Sasha Berliner brings music from her upcoming album Fantome to this homecoming performance. Berliner began on drums at eight and attended the Oakland School for the Arts, studying with Howard Wiley and Dave Ellis before becoming a two-year member of the SFJAZZ High School All-Stars Orchestra, performing with the Monterey Jazz Festival Next Generation Jazz Orchestra and Stanford Jazz Workshops.

An album of songs about specific places in the USA, it is both a celebration and a critique of America, as much as it's also a project of ballads, standards, romance, social reflection, melodic invention, improvisation and even tribute. Above all, it is a meditation on power and the importance of place.
