Bienen School associate professor of violin Jinjoo Cho and special guests present a powerful recital culminating a week-long colloquium devoted to 20th-century American composer George Rochberg, titled Unearthing Love and Grief in George Rochberg’s Third String Quartet. The event highlights the dramatic and deeply personal transformation in Rochberg’s musical voice following the loss of his teenage son—a shift that ignited spirited debate across the musical world.

Join us for an exquisite afternoon of classical music at the Shirley Welsh Ryan Opera Theater, located within the prestigious Bienen School of Music at Northwestern University. This special event features the talented Michael Wattai, a Master of Music student specializing in the horn, under the tutelage of Gail Williams and Jonathan Boen. Mozart's Overture to The Magic Flute, arranged by Dutschke and edited by Ralph Lockwood, and J.S. Bach's Allemande from Cello Suite No. 4 in E-flat Major, BWV 1010. Additionally, the audience will be treated to Giovanni Punto's Horn Concerto No. 5 in F Major, arranged by Robert Ostermeyer, and George Rochberg's Trio for Clarinet, Horn, and Piano.

Michael Wattai will be joined by an ensemble of gifted musicians, including Anjali Covill on clarinet, Gwen Boros, Lily Kern, and Mark Morris on horn, and Kay Kim on piano, making for a rich and diverse musical experience.

The program promises a journey through the realms of piano literature, featuring Alexander Scriabin's enigmatic Sonata No. 9 "Black Mass," Op. 68, and Franz Liszt's monumental Sonata in B Minor, S. 178.
