Hailed as “a knockout performer” by The Times, Singaporean-British mezzo Fleur Barron brings her burnished voice to her Haymarket debut in the title role of the martyred Saint John the Baptist. Also in their company debuts, Haymarket welcomes bass-baritone Christian Pursell as Herod, the king who is reluctant to execute John the Baptist, and Eric Ferring as the savage confidant who pushes for the saint’s brutal execution. Radiant sopranos Erica Schuller and Kristen Knutson Berka return to Haymarket as the scorned mother and daughter out for blood.

Nighttime in old Venice: music floating from cafés provided inspiration for composers from Claudio Monteverdi to Antonio Vivaldi. In our Venetian evening, dueling violinists set sparks flying in two Vivaldi double-concertos. Highlights from Monteverdi’s L’Orfeo and the famous Lamento della Ninfa remind us that love and betrayal often go hand in hand. The program culminates with a visit to the Jewish Ghetto of Venice – the scene of lively dances and the delightful Sephardic party-piece, Seven Ways to Cook Eggplant.

From the rich legacy of psalm settings, our season finale juxtaposes music from the Jewish and Christian traditions. In convertendo (Psalm 126) from the operatic master Jean-Philippe Rameau infuses the psalmist’s words with flair and passion, while companion pieces by Salamone Rossi and J. S. Bach infuse psalm texts with sonorous counterpoint.
