In the two decades since Hiromi released her stunning debut album Another Mind, the Japanese pianist/composer has blazed an incandescent trail across the jazz scene. Equally impressive in acoustic or electric settings, she delves into a different kind of fusion on her latest project that encompasses and eclipses the boundaries of jazz, classical and pop, taking improvisation and composition to new heights of complexity and sophistication.

Ever since the 2003 release of her groundbreaking debut, Another Mind, pianist Hiromi has astonished audiences with a creative energy that eclipses the boundaries of jazz, classical, and pop, taking improvisation and composition to new heights of complexity and sophistication. Taking the stage as part of the electrified four-piece ensemble sonicwonder, Hiromi builds on the spark of collaboration to create something magnificent.

From her debut album to her 2021 performance at the opening ceremonies of the Tokyo Olympics, Hiromi has electrified audiences and earned the deep respect of jazz icons like Ahmad Jamal, Chick Corea and Stanley Clarke. Her live performances are legendary for their energy and jaw-dropping improvisation. For this Mondavi Center debut she’ll be working her new quartet Sonicwonder, whose new album is forthcoming in fall 2023.

No jazz pianist alive is possessed of more explosive virtuosity or thrilling unpredictability than Hiromi – a GRAMMY-winning artist the All Music Guide calls “one of the most remarkable pianists of the past half century.” Her second SFJAZZ residency with her Sonicwonder quartet features the masterful trumpeter Adam O’Farrill, French-born bass phenom Hadrien Feraud, and monster drummer Gene Coye, celebrating the release of her new Concord album, the follow-up to her 2023 debut with this project.

Other people can put a name on what I do. It’s just the union of what I’ve been listening to and what I’ve been learning. It has some elements of classical music, it has some rock, it has some jazz, but I don’t need to give it a name.”
