Igor Stravinsky was commissioned to write The Firebird early in his career by Sergei Diaghilev, famed director of the Ballets Russes in Paris. Inspired by folklore, this suite from the ballet takes the listener through a dramatic and fantastical journey.

Music Director Rafael Payare and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra return for the 2023-2024 Jacobs Masterworks season with a jubilant and multifaceted program at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. The evening begins with Texu Kim’s Zzan!!, which means "cheers" in Korean and employs drinking glasses as percussion instruments. The evening continues with a couple of exciting NYC/Latino Abreu Danzas from American composer David Chesky. Billy Childs’ Saxophone Concerto, co-commissioned by the San Diego Symphony, with soloist Steven Banks, makes its West Coast Premiere.

The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park

Music Director Rafael Payare and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra return for the 2023-2024 Jacobs Masterworks season with a jubilant and multifaceted program at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. The evening begins with Texu Kim’s Zzan!!, which means "cheers" in Korean and employs drinking glasses as percussion instruments. The evening continues with Mozart’s festive Exsultate Jubilate, featuring opera sensation Liv Redpath. Billy Childs’ Saxophone Concerto, co-commissioned by the San Diego Symphony, with soloist Steven Banks, makes its West Coast Premiere. The second half of the evening features a World Premiere by Juan Colomer, A Casual Walk to Extinction, and R. Strauss’ magnificent Also sprach Zarathustra, the fanfare of which was popularized in the 1968 film 2001: A Space Odyssey.

Explore the intersection of jazz and classical music as saxophonist Steven Banks takes the stage for a moving concerto dedicated to the Black experience in America. End your night with Fiesta!, four Latin, Afro-Peruvian and pop music-inspired dances by Jimmy López Bellido.
