In conjunction with the exhibition Looking Back Toward the Future: Contemporary Photography from China at the Kemper Art Museum, this program presents a dialogue between a solo suite by J.S. Bach, and a set of Chinese folk songs arranged by Zhou Long, telling stories separated by time and geography through the voice of the solo cello.

It might be the middle of winter, but you’ll be singing “Summertime….and the livin’ is easy” when the Springfield Symphony performs George Gershwin’s symphonic portrait from his African-American opera Porgy and Bess. We also perform the music of Pulitzer Prize-winning composer Zhou Long in his thrilling and cacophonous symphonic work The Rhyme of Taigu, inspired by Japanese Taiko drumming.

One of the world’s foremost chamber ensembles, the Shanghai Quartet will celebrate its 40th anniversary season in 2024. Formed at the Shanghai Conservatory following the end of China's harrowing Cultural Revolution, the Quartet has established a presence through North America, Europe, and Asia performing for the major series. Among innumerable collaborations with eminent artists, they have performed with the Tokyo, Juilliard, and Guarneri Quartets; cellists Yo-Yo Ma and Lynn Harrell; pianists Menahem Pressler, Peter Serkin, Jean-Yves Thibaudet, and Yuja Wang; pipa virtuoso Wu Man; and the vocal ensemble Chanticleer. The Shanghai Quartet appears regularly at many of North America’s most prominent chamber music festivals.

Waves upon waves of lyrical music, will wash over everyone as we venture to “la Mer,” and celebrate sounds of the sea that features two local university choirs, a chamber-style piece by Claude Debussy, Handel’s “Water Music” and captivating music from a Pulitzer Prize winning Chinese-American composer.
