Prepare to be swept off your feet as Dalia Stasevska returns to Seattle with a program celebrating the rhythms of Mexico and Argentina. The Night of the Maya pulsates with a huge percussion section, traditional instruments and a full orchestra. Originally composing for a 1939 film score, Revueltas created an orchestral suite to give this music a life in the concert hall. Malambo illustrates the infectious rhythms of Argentinian gaucho dance traditions. And beloved collaborator Augustin Hadelich brings Prokofiev at his most wickedly daring with the First Violin Concerto — a concert that could very well raise the roof of Benaroya Hall.

The New York-born Mexican conductor Alondra de la Parra has created a cultural beacon with the Paax GNP festival on the Caribbean coast of Yucatán. The aim is to celebrate the diversity of Mexican music and to anchor the country's rich music scene more firmly in the international consciousness. This is an aim that is also reflected in the program for the 7th Philharmonic Concert, which also draws cultural links to the former colonial power Spain. The 1939 film "La noche de los mayas" is about a Mayan tribe and its encounter with the "modern" world, for which Silvestre Revueltas composed rhythmic-dynamic music. And rhythm also plays a central role in Maurice Ravel's "Rapsodie espagnole", the movements of which have various Spanish dances in their titles, including the famous Habanera, while Manuel de Falla creates an impressionistic mood picture of "Nights in Spanish Gardens" with folkloristic elements and Andalusian dances. Also taking part is the jazz pianist and composer Thomas Enhco, a festival companion of Alondra de la Parra and Duisburg debutant. Jazz influences and Enhco's experience with film music can be heard in the "Rhapsody for Piano and Orchestra".

This January, Conductor Emerita Gisèle Ben-Dor leads Pro Arte through an adventure of music and storytelling that will thrill your whole family.  In The Story of Babar, the tale of a little elephant’s journey from orphan to king is accompanied at every turn by Francis Poulenc’s picturesque music. Our young soloist shines in the irrepressible finale of Joseph Haydn’s first cello concerto. Sensemayá, by Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas, is a spellbinding depiction of an Afro-Caribbean ceremony in which a ritualist must subdue a snake. Our program ends with the riotous Toy Symphony, in which playful instruments like a triangle, a rattle, and a cuckoo whistle all try to steal the spotlight.

Gustavo Dudamel leads a festive exploration of Latin American music for Día de los Muertos with Villa-Lobos’ progressive tour de force and Gabriela Ortiz’s 2019 Yanga. Her work for orchestra, chorus, and percussion ensemble is characterized by its use of African instruments and colorful, multilayered rhythms. Ortiz says, “[Yanga] speaks to the greatness of humanity when in search of equality and the universal right to enjoy freedom to the fullest.” Revueltas’ film score La noche de los Mayas digs deeper into Mexico’s ancient culture brought into conversation with the modern world, bolting through thunderous, dynamic rhythms and a flute interlude based on a traditional Yucatan evening song. Within the music is what poet Octavio Paz describes as Revueltas’ “deep-felt but also joyful concern for man.”

Feel the passion and intensity of the tango in Piazzola’s renowned “Seasons”, juxtaposed with the exhilarating and profound string quartet “Música de Feria” by Revueltas. The program also features the graceful compositions of Manuel Ponce, offering a glimpse into the elegant charm of his musical creations. Works by 20th-century composers Alberto Ginastera (Argentina) and Mario Lavista (Mexico) top off an exciting and varied program.

Aaron Copland made four highly publicized government-sponsored trips to Latin America between 1941 and 1963. During these visits, he shared contemporary American concert music with Latin American audiences, including his own violin sonata, heard on tonight’s program. Back home, he drew US attention to the composers and musicians he met in Latin America, such as Heitor Villa-Lobos of Brazil and Silvestre Revueltas and Manuel Ponce of Mexico, all whom Copland knew personally and whose works are also featured. Another contemporary of Copland was the Black American composer William Grant Still, whose Panamanian Dances were inspired by a collection of Latin American folk songs. The history of Pan-American musical exchange predates Copland.

The concert opens with José Pablo Moncayo’s Huapango, a lively and joyful tribute to the popular music of the Mexican state of Veracruz. Manuel de Falla’s gorgeously orchestrated Nights in the Gardens of Spain featuring the debut of young Mexican pianist Rachid Bernal will immerse us in Spanish Impressionism. Silvestre Revueltas is one of the giants among Mexican composers, and I am very excited to introduce to you his suite from the movie La Noche de Los Mayas, featuring a multimedia presentation of Mayan art. And finally, a great mariachi ensemble Mariachi Los Camperos will play selections of Mexican songs with the Madison Symphony. A truly unique concert designed to lift your spirits and bring my 30th anniversary celebration to a rousing and joyful finale.

Since their formation in September 2020, the quartet has captivated audiences with performances in various outdoor venues, and they are now set to release their debut album featuring Dvorak’s American Quartet with Epidemic Classics.

This performance is not only a musical journey but also a testament to the quartet's dedication to bringing classical music to the forefront of cultural conversation. The program for the evening includes Silvestre Revueltas' "Música de Feria," Antonín Dvořák's "String Quartet No. 12 in F, Op. 96, American," and Manuel M. Ponce's "Estrellita," showcasing a blend of vibrant and soulful compositions that promise to leave you mesmerized.

Carlos Miguel Prieto, celebrated as a rising star both domestically and abroad, was named 2019 Conductor of the Year by Musical America and is the foremost Mexican conductor of his generation. He serves as artistic director of México City’s Minería Symphony, which was founded in the 1970s and is widely regarded as the leading musical institution in México — one that regularly supports and programs Mexican composers. Housed at the Academia de Música del Palacio de Minería, the name honors the period from the 18th century when mining was one of the region’s most important economic activities.

Musical America’s 2019 Conductor of the Year Carlos Miguel Prieto makes a triumphant return to Kansas City stages with pianist Gabriela Montero and México City’s Minería [mee-neh-REE-ah] Symphony Orchestra of Mexico this season. The program includes Montero’s own piano concerto “The Latin Concerto,” Silvestre Revueltas’ massive work for expanded orchestra Night of the Mayas, a new piece by Gabriela Ortiz and Carlos Chávez’s Symphony No. 2.

An exuberant melding of jazz, blues and classical styles, Gershwin’s Piano Concerto in F is an ideal vehicle for Illinois native Conrad Tao, “a personality-plus pianist with a fearless technique” (Chicago Classical Review). Bernstein’s beloved West Side Story dances include themes from the songs “Somewhere” and “Maria.” Barber’s soulful overture and Revueltas’ joyfully raucous Sensemayá frame the program.

Frank opens her “Dances” with what she calls “an unabashed tribute” to the urban jungle evoked in Bernstein’s West Side Story. TWELVE percussionists pack the stage for Revueltas’ rhythmic, dynamic, and booming piece!

“Our guest conductor this season is Joseph Young, music director of the Berkley Symphony in California. Young put together a program of exciting music coming right from the ballet stage. And our guest soloist is the master of the guitar, Pepe Romero. He made his first recording back in 1959, and has since recorded more than 60 albums! Pepe has performed with symphonies across the country and throughout the world. Performing in Oklahoma City, his music leads us from Mexico to Spain and France as he communicates the richness and beauty of the classical guitar.”

Dudamel leads two of his dramatic specialties: Silvestre Revueltas’ eerie film score that features a wild, extended section in which countless percussion instruments suggest Mayan rituals. Then it’s Igor Stravinsky’s brilliantly colorful score for a ballet based on a weird tale of a magician and his three puppets. Launching the evening is a world premiere from Venezuelan-born Ricardo Lorenz.

Rachmaninoff’s unforgettable melodies, emotional depth, technical brilliance, and rich orchestral textures are instantly recognizable and stay with the listener long after the music ends. His Second Piano Concerto expresses a wide range of emotions, from passionate intensity to melancholic longing, often reflecting the composer’s own personal experiences. The melody in the second movement inspired Eric Carmen’s bestselling tune “All By Myself.”

TSO principal flute Alexander Lipay solos on Ibert’s flute concerto on a concert of impressionistic journeys from France to Latin America.

Debussy’s charming Suite bergamasque is most well-known for its popular third movement, “Clair de lune,” while Jacques Ibert’s effervescent concerto is a supremely demanding showpiece of the flute concerto repertoire, coaxing brilliant sounds and melodies from the soloist and orchestra.

Five-time GRAMMY Award-winning Nicaraguan conductor Giancarlo Guerrero leads the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra in a south-of-the-border immersion, packing plenty of heat into a fusion of Afro-Caribbean, Central and South American traditions, including the tango-infused Sinfonía Buenos Aires. The renowned Venezuelan soloist Pacho Flores dips into Mexico's rich trumpet-playing tradition for a piece written by him and for him by Arturo Márquez.

As spring gathers apace in May, the Komische Oper presents one of the twentieth century’s pivotal masterpieces: Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring. A ballet depicting a springtime sacrificial ritual, it’s still one of the modern repertoire’s most imposing works, featuring intricate rhythms and bold melodies. The American conductor Tito Muñoz is also bringing us a fascinating work from across the Atlantic. While Stravinsky was scandalizing early twentieth-century Europe with his expressionist ballets, the Mexican composer Silvestre Revueltas—much less well known in Germany—was crafting his own orchestral masterpiece, Sensemayá, likewise inspired by ancient dance rituals. In addition, the soprano Josefine Mindus returns to the Komische Oper with Brett Dean’s contemporary Shakespearean meditation And Once I Played Ophelia. And what better way to conclude the evening than with Charles Ives’ existential inquiry, The Unanswered Question?

We invite you to travel to Latin America with music! The Lithuanian Symphony Wind Orchestra Chamber Ensemble presents a program specially prepared for this concert, “Latin Wind”, which will take you to the colorful and passionate rhythms of Latin America. At the concert, you will hear works by famous, but less frequently performed in our concert halls, composers from Mexico, Venezuela, Brazil, and Argentina for wind ensembles of various compositions, covering a wide range of styles – from the energetic dance music intonations of Arturo Márquez and Aldemar Romero to the mystically colorful “Quarteto simbólico” by Villa-Lobos or the pieces of Silvestre Revueltas created in the spirit of modernism.

Chaos, whistles, angry heckles, and even physical altercations: When Igor Stravinsky's ballet The Rite of Spring premiered in Paris in 1913, the audience was outraged by a real scandal. What music, pounding, orgiastic, of almost obscene sensuality! And then there was the subject matter: a pagan ritual celebrating spring and fertility, including the sacrifice of a virgin. Shocking! Often, however, it is precisely the most heated waves that calm down particularly quickly.
