Aron Kallay presents two new commissions written in memory of friends and family. Marek Zebrowski’s Capriccio notturno was written in memory of Aron’s grandmother, Cecilia Viola Kallay. Daniel Allas’ Analysis of a Dream was written in memory of Piano Sphere’s very own Sarah Gibson. On the rest of the program, Aron is joined by friends to play music that explores birds, warped time, the infinite, the play of light and dark on canvas, and wickedness without consequence.`

Wicked GOAT Season 3 kicks off with music inspired by our furry, feathered, fishy friends… and perhaps a mythical, scary sea creature! From Juhi Bansal’s piano trio Wings, depicting imaginary birds in flight, to Sarah Gibson’s Sea Monkey and Thomas Kotcheff’s wgah’nahl fhtagn, to George Crumb’s musical portraits of the family dogs in Mundus Canis, this program is all about animals.

Pasadena Conservatory of Music

Flutist and program curator Catherine Gregory, percussionist Ian Rosenbaum, and soprano Ariadne Greif, explore the relationship of sound, breath, and life through a collection of newly written miniatures by a diverse array of composers. The human voice and percussion join the flute to fashion a trio of the world’s oldest instruments in this theatrically conceived program, Just Breath(e).

Works by Timo Andres, Clarice Assad, Kinan Azmeh, Juhi Bansal, Viet Cuong, Ellis Ludwig-Leone, Diane Monroe and Matthew Evan Taylor are intertwined with specially arranged works by Raven Chacon, Chris Cerrone, and Kevin Puts that play on the same theme.

A contemplative Happy Hour exploring the porous boundary between mortality and the beyond. Musical selections include the slow movement of Beethoven’s String Quartet Opus 132 and the world-premiere instrumental-only chamber arrangement of Eric Whitacre’s profoundly moving choral work, The Sacred Veil. The setting – a marble sanctuary suffused with the rainbow light of hundreds of stained glass windows – sets the scene. Mimosa and pastry reception to follow.

The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park

American violinist Simone Porter leads this collaboration between New Century and students from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in this musical tour of illumination. Featuring works from the 12th to the 21st century, each piece on the program depicts different kinds of light: light from nature, light that inspires or clarifies, light that bestows joy.  Beginning with Andrew Norman's Sabina, written in response to an ecstatic experience watching the sun rise in an ancient Roman cathedral, and moving through the upward gaze of Hildegard von Bingen's antiphon to divine wisdom, the program concludes with Mozart's Divertimento in F Major, the very spirit of levity and brilliance.
