Abandon yourself to its raw energy and revel in its electrifying intensity as Aziz Shokhakimov, Music Director of Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, guest conducts the DSO. Jörgen van Rijen solos in the US premiere of a concerto by Andrew Norman, praised by the Boston Globe for his “staggering imagination.” Opening the concert, Rimsky-Korsakov dazzles you with colorful evocations of Spain.

**Simone Porter, Violin:**

New Zealand-born violinist Geneva Lewis has forged a reputation as a musician of consummate artistry. This opera promises to be a delightful experience for all ages, exploring themes of discovery, communication, and the universal quest for understanding.

For his debut concert, he conducts Andrew Norman’s 10-minute orchestra joyride, Unstuck, which brims with invention and energy. The orchestra’s first concertmaster, American Noah Bendix-Balgley, takes the stage for Mozart’s first violin concerto before the orchestra concludes its program with Erich Korngold’s only symphony — a work that the composer never heard performed live. Completed in 1952 and dedicated to the memory of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the work had a radio premiere in 1954 and was not performed live until 1972, 15 years after the composer’s death. Korngold’s sweeping orchestrations and brilliant orchestral color made him a huge success in Hollywood as a film composer, all of which are on display in this insightful and dramatic score.

Kirill Petrenko makes his eagerly awaited Boston debut as music director of the Berliner Philharmoniker in what promises to be a highlight of the new season: a truly unmissable event. Petrenko leads the orchestra in three pieces, culminating in a sweepingly dramatic, richly textured work that he deeply champions: the Korngold Symphony.

John Corigliano long resisted writing a symphony, seeing it as a form that served a composer’s ego over the audience and performers. At the height of the AIDS crisis, Corigiliano overcame that hesitation and wrote his Symphony No. 1 as a way to memorialize friends lost to the epidemic. Though he was a member of the so-called “Silent Generation,” Corigliano’s symphony served as influential composition for those coming of age in symphonic circles when it premiered in 1990. In this Gen X program curated by Thomas Adès, the milestone Symphony No. 1 is paired with music by Andrew Norman and Jonathan Bailey Holland.

Following its wildly creative video presentation as part of the Spring 2021 Cal Performances at Home season, the adventurous new-music ensemble yMusic—all members of Generation Y—returns with an exciting program of new and recent works for its in-person Berkeley debut.

Comprising “six contemporary classical polymaths who playfully overstep the boundaries of musical genres” (The New Yorker), yMusic is committed to working closely with living composers, from pop stars like Paul Simon, Regina Spektor, and Ben Folds to leading lights of the classical music world.

The centerpiece of the concert is the West Coast premiere of Difference, a Cal Performances co-commission by the Grammy-nominated and Grawemeyer Award-winning composer Andrew Norman, hailed as “the leading American composer of his generation” by the Los Angeles Times. The program also includes Missy Mazzoli’s meditative Ecstatic Science; Berkeley-born composer Gabriella Smith’s Tessellations; Together, a new work Judd Greenstein wrote for the group during quarantine; and several new pieces co-composed by the ensemble during the past year’s hiatus from live performance.

Venezuelan conductor Rafael Payare’s profound musicianship, technical brilliance and charismatic presence on the podium has elevated him as one of the most sought-after young conductors, working regularly with the world’s leading orchestras. Payare currently serves as music director designate of the San Diego Symphony Orchestra and the Orchestre symphonique de Montréal. Prior to that, Payare was Principal Conductor and Music Director of the Ulster Orchestra from 2014-19 with whom he appeared twice at the BBC Proms in 2016 and 2019. The Orchestra recently named him Conductor Laureate in recognition of his vast artistic contribution to the Orchestra and City of Belfast during his five year tenure.  Francisco “Pacho” Flores, principal trumpet of the Simón Bolívar Symphony Orchestra and founding member of the Simón Bolívar Brass Quintet, has been achieving worldwide recognition as a soloist, captivating audiences with his energy and the bell-like beauty of his tone. His playing integrates jazz and Latin American influences with his classical training. In 2005 he earned a conservatory diploma with a unanimously awarded Prix de Virtuosité. He has won four international competitions, the most prestigious of all: the Maurice André Competition in 2006.  In the 100-plus years since its inception, the San Diego Symphony Orchestra has become one of the most significant orchestras in the United States and was designated a Tier 1 Orchestra by the League of American Orchestras in 2010. Committed to providing musical experiences of superior quality for the greater San Diego community and beyond, the orchestra is known for their rich mixture of innovative and educational programming designed to appeal to all ages and cultures.
