Composer

With his ballet music The Firebird, the young Igor Stravinsky revolutionized the dance theatre – through an unusual fusion of Russian folk music with shimmering timbres and powerful rhythms. Klaus Mäkelä, the incoming Chief Conductor of the Amsterdam Concertgebouw Orchestra and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, pairs Stravinsky’s work with Andrew Norman’s Symphony Play. In this piece, the American composer explores our attention span in the digital age and the rules of complex video games. He does so with a musical language that oscillates between wit and aggressive sharpness.

American violinist Simone Porter leads this collaboration between New Century and students from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music in this musical tour of illumination. Featuring works from the 12th to the 21st century, each piece on the program depicts different kinds of light: light from nature, light that inspires or clarifies, light that bestows joy. Beginning with Andrew Norman's Sabina, written in response to an ecstatic experience watching the sun rise in an ancient Roman cathedral, and moving through the upward gaze of Hildegard von Bingen's antiphon to divine wisdom, the program concludes with Mozart's Divertimento in F Major, the very spirit of levity and brilliance.

It starts with a bassoon solo, and before long there is a profusion of twitters, plucked strings and pounding of pagan drums…like all manner of life forms breaking through the frozen crust of the Russian landscape as pulsing rhythms and primitive rituals proclaim the veneration of spring. It’s The Rite of Spring, the iconic work that changed classical music forever and even today continues to be a thrilling, visceral experience. Abandon yourself to its raw energy and revel in its electrifying intensity as Aziz Shokhakimov, Music Director of Strasbourg Philharmonic Orchestra, guest conducts the DSO. Jörgen van Rijen solos in the US premiere of a concerto by Andrew Norman, praised by the Boston Globe for his “staggering imagination.” Opening the concert, Rimsky-Korsakov dazzles you with colorful evocations of Spain.

For his debut concert, he conducts Andrew Norman’s 10-minute orchestra joyride, Unstuck, which brims with invention and energy. The orchestra’s first concertmaster, American Noah Bendix-Balgley, takes the stage for Mozart’s first violin concerto before the orchestra concludes its program with Erich Korngold’s only symphony — a work that the composer never heard performed live. Completed in 1952 and dedicated to the memory of Franklin Delano Roosevelt, the work had a radio premiere in 1954 and was not performed live until 1972, 15 years after the composer’s death. Korngold’s sweeping orchestrations and brilliant orchestral color made him a huge success in Hollywood as a film composer, all of which are on display in this insightful and dramatic score.

Kirill Petrenko makes his eagerly awaited Boston debut as music director of the Berliner Philharmoniker in what promises to be a highlight of the new season: a truly unmissable event. John Corigliano long resisted writing a symphony, seeing it as a form that served a composer’s ego over the audience and performers. At the height of the AIDS crisis, Corigiliano overcame that hesitation and wrote his Symphony No. 1 as a way to memorialize friends lost to the epidemic. Though he was a member of the so-called “Silent Generation,” Corigliano’s symphony served as influential composition for those coming of age in symphonic circles when it premiered in 1990. In this Gen X program curated by Thomas Adès, the milestone Symphony No. 1 is paired with music by Andrew Norman and Jonathan Bailey Holland.
