From the locomotion of Cristian Grases’ El tren para Belén (Train to Bethlehem), the rhythms of cueca (a traditional dance rhythm from Argentina and Chile), carnavalito (a Bolivian folk dance), chacarera (a traditional dance from northwestern Argentina) in Ariel Ramírez’s Navidad Nuestra, Eric Whitacre’s peaceful and uplifting Glow, filled with lush harmonies and ethereal melodies, as if it is illuminating the darkness, to a world premiere by Ernesto Herrera, it's sure to be a magical evening filled with warmth and holiday spirit!

With the guest ensemble Alturas Duo, the Choruses of UC Davis and Nicolás Dosman bring the rhythms and holiday vocal traditions of the Americas (both Southern America and Northern America) to Davis. Works include Navidad Nuestra by Ariel Ramírez (an Andean influenced folk telling of the nativity story), Aaron Copland’s Zion’s Walls (drawn from Appalachian America’s hymnal traditions), and Abreme la Puerta (a traditional Christmastime song from Puerto Rico).

This year our holiday concerts explore and celebrate music of the Spanish diaspora, as well as other seasonal delights. Celebrate the music of Latin America with this brilliant program led by Maestro Guillermo Figueroa, presenting the talents of your Santa Fe Symphony Orchestra and guest soloists JP Jofre and Miguel del Águila. JP Jofre, one of the world’s leading performers of the bandoneón—the Latin American version of the accordion—joins us for Astor Piazzolla’s Concerto for Bandoneón, “Aconcagua.” We are also honored to have a special appearance by Latin GRAMMY®-nominated composer and musician Miguel del Águila playing the conga on his popular Conga, a not-to-be-missed performance! This exciting afternoon of great music also presents Roberto Sierra’s brilliant Symphony No. 3, “La Salsa” and Ariel Ramírez’ Misa Criolla, with a side-by-side performance with The Santa Fe Symphony Youth Symphony Orchestra, plus appearances by local guitarists and percussionists.
