Glass Pieces is Robbins’ electrifying 1983 ballet to music by the iconic contemporary composer Philip Glass. Alexei Ratmansky employed a classic 19th-century piano composition from Mussorgsky to create a ballet that translates the music into the choreographer’s distinctive 21st-century idioms. Gianna Reisen’s Play Time, which debuted at the 2022 Fall Fashion Gala, is set to a score by Grammy-winning singer and songwriter Solange Knowles. Prokofiev’s classic Peter and the Wolf makes a welcome return. Originally written for a young audience, the piece has long delighted audiences of all ages. The TSO was highly impressed by Xavier Muzik’s work through the 2022 Earshot collaboration with the American Composers Orchestra, and immediately commissioned this new work having its world premiere. Mussorgsky’s stormy Night on Bald Mountain, inspired by the Russian legend of revels taking place on St. John’s Eve is followed by Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9, often thought of as his most classical. Though small in scale and length, it is full of the composer’s characteristic irony and wit.

In his large-scale choral opera, the Russian composer Modest Mussorgsky tackled a theme that is still relevant today: the extremes to which a hunger for power can lead. Mussorgsky’s Pictures at an Exhibition may have inspired more arrangements than any other piece in the classical canon, but this performance eschews the most famous by Ravel for a more intimate version for String Quartet. Mussorgsky’s aren’t the only images in this programme – Crawford-Seeger’s Wind Quintet paints a compelling image of the ailing composer returning to the thing she most loves, while Arnold’s Guitar Concerto is a tacit portrait of the great jazz guitarists – Django Reinhardt’s influence on the piece is unmistakable.
