Following acclaimed sold-out performances in Paris’s Cité de la musique, Brussels and Lisbon, French-American cellist Sonia Wieder-Atherton and pianist Sarah Rothenberg bring Wieder-Atherton and filmmaker Chantal Akerman’s D’Est en musique to the US, in conjunction with a retrospective of Akerman’s films at the Museum of Modern Art and a screening at the Museum of Fine Arts, Houston.

Tyshawn Sorey’s major new piano work receives its world premiere. Tyshawn Sorey and Sarah Rothenberg’s deep musical relationship grew out of their work together on the DACAMERA-Rothko Chapel commission of Monochromatic Light (Afterlife), and it was during their performances at New York’s Park Avenue Armory that Sorey first conceived of this piece. The intensity and hyper-sensitivity of Sorey’s music corresponds to Rothenberg’s pianism, and this expansive new solo work probes emotional depths and upends our sense of time.

Monday Evening Concerts: Transforming Time

Colburn School

The Isidore Quartet recently burst onto the chamber music scene, winning a prestigious 2023 Avery Fisher Career Grant and the 2022 Banff International String Quartet Competition. They make their Houston debut in a program featuring two extraordinary string quartets by Mozart and Mendelssohn – each composed before the composer’s 30th birthday – and a dazzling new work by Nicky Sohn, who is close in age to her distant contemporaries from the 18th and 19th centuries. Inspired by Miles Davis’s seminal recording of "Bye-Bye Blackbird," Sohn’s quintet, composed for the occasion to feature pianist Sarah Rothenberg and the Isidore Quartet, has its world premiere.

DACAMERA celebrates the 100th anniversary of the birth of influential American composer Morton Feldman, whose music uniquely suspends time. Feldman broke new ground in musical expression in the 1970’s with his experimental works that strove for the stillness of paintings.
