Los Angles County Orchestra (LACO)’s Baroque Series concludes with a selection of masterworks from the Italian Baroque led by Concertmaster Margaret Batjer, among them Vivaldi’s Concerto in D minor for Guitar, featuring South Korean guitarist JIJI, “a graceful and nuanced player” (Kansas City Star). Principal Cello Andrew Shulman is also a soloist on the program that includes Cello Concerto No. 3 in D minor by Leo, who was considered Scarlatti’s heir apparent; Scarlatti’s Sonata in D minor; Vivaldi’s “Spring” from The Four Seasons; and Charles Avison’s Concerto Grosso after Scarlatti, No. 6 in D major. Two contemporary works inspired by the era round out the program – Caroline Shaw’s Stucco & Brocatelle and Max Richter’s recomposed version of “Spring” from Vivaldi’s Four Seasons.

Music of Albeníz, Amy Beach, Correlli, de Falla, Erroll Garner, Paganini, Astor Piazzolla and Manuel Ponce. This powerful duo of young, genre-defying musicians presents a remarkably eclectic concert. Italian Baroque is juxtaposed with 19th-century masterpieces of Paganini; jazz is paired with the seductive gestures of traditional Spanish song; and the paradigm-bending program closes with Astor Piazzolla’s spirited celebration of four eras of tango. Applauded by the Calgary Herald as “talented, sensitive…brilliant,” JIJI is an adventurous guitarist, known for her virtuosity and command of diverse repertoire. Violinist Danbi Um captivates audiences with her virtuosity, individual sound and interpretive sensitivity.
