One of the pinnacles of the orchestral-choral repertoire, Verdi’s Requiem is infrequently presented because of its large forces. When it does come around, performances are always an event, especially with this hand-picked quartet of international soloists and the uplifting massed voices of the TSO Chorus. These concerts mark the work’s 150th anniversary, and who better than Maestro Gomez to lead such a sonic masterpiece.

Sung in Spanish and inspired by the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez, Mexican composer Daniel Catán’s 1996 opera tells the enchanting story of a Brazilian opera diva who returns to her homeland to perform at the legendary opera house of Manaus—and to search for her lost lover, who has vanished into the jungle. The Met premiere stars soprano Ailyn Pérez as Florencia Grimaldi, with Yannick Nézet-Séguin on the podium to lead a spellbinding new production by Mary Zimmerman that brings the mysterious and magical realm of the Amazon to the Met stage.

From its stunningly beautiful solo moments to the rapturous “Dies Irae” that movie trailers have—rightly—lifted as a soundtrack to the end of the world, Verdi’s Requiem is a darkly dramatic 90-minute roller-coaster ride. When Gustavo Dudamel last conducted it a decade ago, the Los Angeles Times raved about his “radical and wondrous” performance that drew in the Bowl audience for moments of “intimate, personal expression” while also soaring in the many massive moments that “shook the Cahuenga Pass.”

The exhilarating soprano Andriana Chuchman returns to Festival Napa Valley to headline L’elisir d’amore, Donizetti’s 1832 comic masterpiece, reprising the role of Adina, with which she made her 2014 Metropolitan Opera debut. The outstanding cast includes tenor Mario Chang as the lovestruck peasant Nemorino, soprano Mikayla Sager as Adina’s friend Giannetta, and singers from the Festival’s Manetti Shrem Summer Conservatory. Directed by Jean-Romain Vesperini with video sets by Anouar Brissel, and Gemma New conducting Festival Orchestra Napa.

The Young People’s Chorus of New York City, an award-winning ensemble led by Francisco J. Núñez, returns to Festival Napa Valley for a celebratory and uniquely American concert. The evening includes the world premiere of Polaris by Nia Imani Franklin, an anthem that pays tribute to the making of Juneteenth a national holiday, and an arrangement of Gordon Getty’s celebrated choral work, Young America. Renowned baritone Lester Lynch reunites with the chorus for a selection of hymns and spirituals. Also performing are the winners of this year’s Manetti Shrem Opera Prize: soprano Mikayla Sager and tenor Mario Chang.

From the dramatic tension of its opening pages to its glorious choral finale setting Schiller's defiant political poem "Ode to Joy," this is a symphony that draws us all together to celebrate and embrace our common humanity. The concert opens with superstar cellist Alisa Weilerstein in Edward Elgar’s Cello Concerto, the English composer's impassioned lament for the catastrophe of the First World War.
