Shin-ichi Fukuda began playing the classical guitar at the age of eleven under the direction of Tatsuya Saitoh and has since pursued a brilliant career as a leading guitarist. He has performed with orchestras and as a solo recitalist in concert halls around the world, including New York’s Merkin Concert Hall, Tokyo’s Metropolitan Museum, and Athens’s Megaron Concert Hall. Fukuda has earned international acclaim for his musicianship, receiving first prizes in the 1st Carpentras International Guitar Competition and the 23rd Paris International Competition, as well as top prizes in competitions and festivals in Italy, Spain, and Japan. Fukuda’s repertoire spans from the Renaissance to today, and he has premiered many pieces by 21st-century composers, such as Leo Brouwer’s Concerto da Requiem, an homage to Toru Takemitsu that is dedicated to Fukuda. A highly gifted and enthusiastic teacher, Fukuda is a guest professor at Shanghai Conservatory in China and has trained many pupils who have gone on to attain the highest honors, including Kaori Muraji, Daisuke Suzuki, and Yasuji Ohagi. He has produced 84 recordings in a career that spans more than four decades.

This concert pays tribute, featuring a piece that became one of his most iconic recordings: Joaquín Rodrigo’s El Concierto de Aranjuez. Reflections on love languages. Human concepts of love and romance, as well as the complicated and sometimes messy emotions associated with them, have remained the primary basis of inspiration for artistic expression throughout history. Music and dance in particular, have been most popularly used in courtship and conveying adoration toward a partner. This concert will explore the love languages of music and dance that came about in the 1920s and 30s, when tango first burst into the mainstream. We are delighted to welcome guitarist JIJI, known for her virtuosity and command of diverse repertoire, to Tippet Rise for the first time. Performing outdoors on the land at the Domo by Ensamble Studio, JIJI’s program Counterpoint Dream, takes us on a musical journey in and out of several centuries including Baroque-period works by the 16th century nun Claudia Sessa, Marin Marais and J.S. Bach, Romantic virtuosos Niccolò Paganini and Isaac Albéniz, Haitian guitarist and composer Frantz Casseus, and American minimalist Steve Reich. The program also includes with works by Antón García-Abril – a special tribute to the great Catalan composer and father of Ensamble Studio’s principal architect of the same name, whose other-worldly structures, including the Domo, are integral to the Tippet Rise experience.

The South Bay Guitar Society, furthering its mission to support local music education, is pleased to present guitarist Julio Reyes in this special concert to benefit Pajaro Middle School in Watsonville, Calif.

Proceeds from this performance will assist Pajaro Middle School's music department replace equipment damaged in the devastating floods of March 10, 2023, in the Pajaro Valley.

Having clinched the First Prize at the 2017 Guitar Foundation of America International Concert Artists Competition, Zhang is celebrated for his unparalleled skill and musicality.

Set against the backdrop of Caramoor's Classical Sunken Garden, this concert promises an unforgettable experience. Zhang's program includes a diverse range of works from composers such as J.S. Bach, Domenico Scarlatti, Isaac Albéniz, and Jean-Philippe Rameau, showcasing the rich history and emotional depth of classical guitar music.

Be there when pianist Alessio Bax, known for his particularly lyrical style of playing, interprets the single-piano version of Ravel’s La Valse as well as works by Bach, Bartok, Chopin and others. Italian-born and New York City-based, Bax launched his career by winning the prestigious Hamamatsu International Piano Competition in Japan at the tender age of 19. He’s since played with more than 150 orchestras around the world and gone on to win numerous other competitions as well as an Avery Fisher Career Grant. His program for the Duke Chamber Arts Series in a cornucopia ranging from Albeniz “Tango” from España to Chopin’s Ballade No. 4 and more. Ravel originally composed La Valse as a ballet, but Diaghilev famously rejected the work while acknowledging it as a masterpiece. The blow to Ravel’s pride later nearly resulted in a duel between the two men.

One of the most acclaimed pianists of his generation and an acknowledged master of Spanish Piano Music, Jose Ramos Santana works with talented Princeton University students in a free workshop, sponsored by the Donna Weng Friedman ’80 Masterclass Series.  A concert will be held after the masterclass presenting works by Beethoven, Chopin, and Albeniz,  and featuring The Wizard of Oz Fantasy (for four hands) by William Hirtz, with pianist Donna Weng Friedman ’80.

Her impeccable musicianship combined with compelling stage presence and fascinating repertoire earned the Korean guitarist First Prize at the 2016 Concert Artists Guild International Competition.

British pianist Benjamin Grosvenor (b.1992) has been described as “the best pianist to come out of England in the last 50 years.” One only needs to listen to his playing to understand that the accolades are well deserved. Grosvenor’s promise was evident from a young age; he was the winner of the Keyboard Final of the 2004 BBC Young Musician Competition at the age of eleven, and was invited to perform with the BBC Symphony Orchestra at the Opening Night of the 2011 BBC Proms at London’s Royal Albert Hall at age nineteen. Turned away from performance by suddenly imposed pandemic precautions while already in Santa Barbara in March 2020, CAMA is delighted to welcome Benjamin Grosvenor back for his proper Santa Barbara and Masterseries debut!

Spend a musical afternoon in Spain, with enchanting colors, rhythms, and textures, beautifully expressed in piano trios of Arbós and Turina, and vocal works by Falla, Rodrigo, and Obradors, the texts of which beautifully express the flair and passion of the Spanish language. The combination of the guitar’s intoxicating sounds, the language’s seductive tones, and the vivid style illustrate the richness of this culture.
