The evening culminates in Prokofiev’s Symphony No. 5, a work the composer described as “a symphony on the greatness of the human soul,” composed in the final years of World War II. The program begins with Adam Schoenberg’s "Cool Cat," a vibrant piece inspired by Los Angeles' own P22 mountain lion, followed by George Gershwin’s "Cuban Overture," a tribute to Sandoval’s Cuban heritage that blends Cuban rhythms with Gershwin's flair. Paul Hindemith’s "Symphonic Metamorphosis" will then showcase the orchestra's versatility, leading into the highlight of the evening, Sandoval’s own "Concerto for Trumpet No. 2." The concert concludes with a touching rendition of Rachmaninoff’s "Themes from Piano Concerto No. 2," arranged by Bob Barrett.

This evening promises to be a harmonious fusion of genres and emotions, captivated by Sandoval's virtuosity on the trumpet, piano, and through his engaging storytelling. The Terrace Theater’s ambiance, complete with dazzling fountains and fire pits, along with live ensemble performances in the lobby, will ensure an elegant and enjoyable experience for all.

In the piano world, it's known as the "Rach Three," a moniker that comes with reverence, a quickening of the heart, and a dash of terror. Among the most difficult of all the popular piano concertos, it was written by one of the greatest pianists who ever lived: Sergei Rachmaninov (a composer who, let’s be honest, had huge hands). For all its difficulty, the Third is equally charming to the listener. To pull off this feat of artistry and virtuosity, the ASO welcomes one of the best: pianist Garrick Ohlsson. Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Music Director Laureate Robert Spano returns for a two-week residency. The longtime leader of the ASO brings with him an old friend of the Orchestra, Emmy Award-winning composer Adam Schoenberg for the world premiere of his Concerto for Orchestra.

Two classic ballet scores join an exciting new dance collaboration. Aaron Copland’s popular Appalachian Spring Suite ends with variations on “Simple Gifts,” while Sergei Prokofiev’s Romeo and Juliet captures the thrills and tragedy of a star-crossed love. American composer Adam Schoenberg writes music that sounds like a cross between Radiohead and Copland. The SLSO commissioned Adam Schoenberg for a new score to be danced by St. Louis’ own The Big Muddy Dance Company.

This week delivers an acoustic riot of color conjured by the musicians of the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. The “fiery young sensation” (ArtsATL) Gemma New returns as guest conductor for Gustav Holst’s off-world delight The Planets. Based on astrology, this irresistible concert suite enchanted audiences at its 1918 debut and has inspired spin-offs ever since, from church singing to Star Wars. Also, on the concert, planet Earth makes a dazzling appearance alongside the ASO percussion section in Salina Fisher’s beautifully atmospheric opener Rainphase. And Adam Schoenberg makes a plea for planetary healing in his 2019 piece Losing Earth, which explores the world’s oldest musical instruments (after the voice) with ASO Principal Percussionist Joseph Petrasek.

Technology is part of our daily lives, but this program reminds us of the awesome power we have unleashed. Adams’ piece depicts a ride in a terrific sports car quickly regretted; Dukas’ setting of the Goethe poem sees a young wizard meddling in things he doesn’t understand; Schoenberg’s new work includes a battle between cello soloist and hologram; and Strauss’ epic tone poem was featured in the original A.I. gone wrong movie, 2001: A Space Odyssey.

The Symphonic Band’s second winter-quarter concert features five contemporary voices who are adding fresh perspectives to the wind band medium. Adam Schoenberg conceived his two-movement work Rise as a piece that could bookend an entire program, and the ensemble will honor this vision by separating the two movements. Omar Thomas’s setting of the well-known folk song “Shenandoah” is, in the words of the composer, “mysterious, somewhat ominous, constantly introspective, and deeply soulful.” Kevin Charoensri’s Rising Light is a powerful statement about anti-Asian hate and represents his non-apologetic celebration of the bicultural identity of Asian Americans. Kevin Day’s energetic Shimmering Sunshine opens the second half of the program, followed by Ryan George’s An Gé Fhiáin (The Wild Goose), a celebration of the Celtic people and their belief that the Holy Spirit was represented by this wild, untamed bird.

Join us at our “Picture Studies” concert where the University Wind Ensemble presents evocative and illuminating repertoire composed by living composers. Repertoire includes Quinn Mason’s Dallas Arts District Fanfare, Shuying LI’s Starry Ocean, Michael Daugherty’s Passicaglia in Primary Colors, and Adam Schoenberg’s Picture Studies. The 2025 Wind Band Student Concerto Competition winner will also be featured in this concert.

An exuberant celebration of music by three composers, all of whom came from elsewhere to live in California. The youngest, Massachusetts-born Adam Schoenberg, is famous for his ability to meld popular idioms into energetic pieces for classical audiences and Cool Cat is no exception. This delightful fanfare of an overture celebrates the life of P-22, the world-famous mountain lion who lived for a decade in the hills above Los Angeles. John Adams, one of the most renowned American composers, wrote his piano concerto Century Rolls in the 1990s as a celebration of the great age of American player-piano recordings a century ago by artists such as Jelly Roll Morton and Gershwin. Russian-born Rachmaninoff himself spent much of the last quarter century of his life in the US, becoming a citizen and owning homes in New York and Los Angeles. Rachmaninoff was a huge admirer of American popular music and in the last movement of his Third Symphony we can hear his delight in Hollywood film-music and especially the movies of Fred Astaire and Ginger Rogers.
