Paul Huang was a recipient of a 2015 Avery Fisher Career Grant and a 2017 Lincoln Center Award for Emerging Artists. Huang makes recent and forthcoming appearances with the Mariinsky Orchestra with Valery Gergiev, Detroit Symphony with Leonard Slatkin, Houston Symphony with Andrés Orozco-Estrada, Rotterdam Philharmonic with Lahav Shani, Seoul Philharmonic with Markus Stenz, and return to the National Symphony Orchestra of Taiwan as its artist-in-residence. A frequent guest artist at music festivals worldwide, he recently stepped in for Anne-Sophie Mutter at Bravo! Vail Music Festival playing Mozart’s Violin Concerto No. 4 with Chamber Orchestra Vienna-Berlin as well as recital debuts at the Lucerne Festival in Switzerland and Aspen Music Festival, both to critical acclaim. He is an artist member of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and plays on the legendary 1742 ex-Wieniawski Guarneri del Gesù on loan through the Stradivari Society of Chicago.

The concert will feature an internationally-acclaimed Balkan violinist Robert Lakatoš from Serbia performing Ravel’s Tzigane and Sarasate’s Caprice Basque on his private collection violin of Antonio Stradivari from 1709.  Mr. Lakatoš is one of the most promising young artists of his generation and the GLCO is thrilled to bring him to the northern Michigan audiences.

José Silvestre de los Dolores White (1835-1918), also known as José White and Joseph White, was born in Matanzas, Cuba, during colonial times. He began playing the violin and composing at a young age. His professional debut occurred in 1854 alongside the American pianist Louis Moreau Gottschalk (1829-1869), who inspired him to study at the Paris Conservatoire. There, he won the Premier Prix after less than one year of study. White gained global recognition as a soloist, composer, and pedagogue and, in the United States, he notably became the first soloist of African descent to perform with the New York Philharmonic Society, during his 1875-1876 tour.

These concerts conclude with Dvořák’s radiant Eighth Symphony, interwoven with a multitude of folksongs and delightful dance melodies.

Traditionally, the Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra welcomes the New Year with an attractive and entertaining program in the festive atmosphere of the Wiesbaden Kurhaus - this time under the direction of the Portuguese conductor Nuno Coelho. The chief conductor of the Orquesta Sinfónica del Principado de Asturias and the South Korean violinist Bomsori Kim present a rousing musical program that combines French esprit, Spanish temperament and Mediterranean timbres.

Two trailblazing instrumental pioneers come together for a very special recital! Israeli-born mandolin virtuoso Avi Avital, well known to Cal Performances audiences, has charted new territory on his instrument with innovative programming and inspired collaborations. He performs with the young concert accordionist Hanzhi Wang in her Berkeley debut, exploring canonic repertoire by composers including Bach, Saint-Saëns, de Falla, Stravinsky, and Bartók, arranged for the duo’s unique instrumentation. “Every plucked sound from Avital’s fingers…radiates warmth and dazzling light” (The Times, London).

This program 0ffers a 300-year history of the orchestra and western music, with selections from the early 1700s (e.g. Handel’s Water Music) to popular movie scores. The San Fernando Valley Symphony Orchestra returns on November 19 with the first concert of a full five-concert season of the finest in symphonic music.

2022-2023 Concert Season -- Fall Concert

Great works have been inspired not only by lofty ideals, but also by the colorful music composers heard played as entertainment outside the concert hall. Among the most mesmerizing performers heard by composers such as Joseph Haydn and Johannes Brahms were the itinerant Roma, whose musical skills combined almost supernatural virtuosity with visceral excitement. Later, before tragically perishing in a Nazi prison, Erwin Schulhoff composed stunning, eclectic music that drew on idioms from folk to jazz, and the Spanish virtuoso Pablo de Sarasate provided violinists with ideal vehicles for simply showing off. Music@Menlo’s twentieth season appropriately closes with Brahms’s first piano quartet, its Rondo alla Zingarese finale, perhaps the greatest chamber music crowd-pleaser of them all.

This concert is preceded by a free afternoon Koret Young Performers Concert (KYPC) at 12:30 p.m. by the 2022 Young Performers Program artists. KYPC programs will be announced in May.

Music@Menlo is delighted to present A Spanish Journey on April 8 and 9, curated by violinist Kristin Lee. The two-day residency centers around gems of Spanish classical music, including de Sarasate’s fiery Carmen Fantasy, and rarely-heard piano trios. The first event (April 8) is an immersive exploration of Spanish music and dance, with demonstrations from a colorful combination of violin, piano, voice, and classical guitar. The second evening (April 9) is a concert performance of the vibrant works discussed, with a rich program of 19th- and 20th-century music.
