Concert Choir & Chorale with Jocelyn Hagen – Changemaker Series

What do a Renaissance genius and the vastness of space have in common? Vision. Curiosity. A relentless drive to understand the world. Hagen’s The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci gives voice to the mind of a thinker whose ideas still shape our world, with the MSU Choir weaving his words into something almost otherworldly. Then, we set our sights on the stars with Holst’s The Planets, a piece that captures the energy, mystery, and wonder of the universe—from the commanding presence of Mars to the dreamlike drift of Neptune. Two journeys—one through history, one through the cosmos—both reminding us of the limitless nature of human imagination.

Cantabile will perform the world premiere of We Are the Garden, a multi-movement choral composition by American composer Jocelyn Hagen commissioned for Cantabile’s 30th anniversary season. Written for treble voices, marimba, cello, percussion and piano, the work combines singing, movement, staging and visual effects. 

The program is presented by over eighty singers of Cantabile’s Performance Division and conducted by Artistic Director Elena Sharkova.

Featuring Leonardo da Vinci's notebooks and Antonio Vivaldi’s celestial Gloria, Visionaries delves into the timeless themes of human expression and divine exploration. The groundbreaking multimedia concert brings da Vinci’s words and drawings to life with state-of-the-art video syncing technology, harmonized with the live voices of the Toronto Mendelssohn Singers in The Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci. Both pieces beautifully reflect the profound complexity and beauty of life.

Join us for an enchanting evening of vocal performance as Audrey Neace, a talented mezzo-soprano and Bachelor of Music student at the Northwestern Bienen School of Music, takes the stage. Under the guidance of Patrice Michaels, Audrey will perform a captivating recital featuring a diverse repertoire that spans the breadth of classical music. The program includes Charles Gounod's "Faites-lui mes aveux" from Faust, selections from Gustav Mahler's Lieder und Gesänge, Gabriel Fauré's Cinq mélodies de Venise, Op. 58, and more, showcasing the depth and versatility of Audrey's vocal talent.

Accompanied by Julia Frodyma, soprano, and Jason Carlson on piano, the evening promises to be a showcase of exceptional musicality and a celebration of the human voice. The recital will also feature works by Vincenzo Bellini, Pauline Viardot, Libby Larsen, Jocelyn Hagen, William Bolcom, and Victor Herbert, offering a rich tapestry of musical expressions.

This special event is scheduled for Sunday, June 2, 2024, at 8:30pm CDT, in the Mary B. Galvin Recital Hall. Located in the Ryan Center for the Musical Arts, the Galvin Recital Hall is renowned for its stunning acoustics and breathtaking views of Lake Michigan and the Chicago skyline, providing the perfect backdrop for an evening of exquisite music.

The SDSU Wind Symphony and Orchestra perform works the new Davis Commissioning Project at the historic Balboa Theatre. The concert features premiere performances of music by composers Frank Ticheli and Jocelyn Hagen. The Wind Symphony is joined by composer Jocelyn Hagen for the premiere of her new work, Medusa, for solo soprano and wind ensemble. Susanna Phillips, soprano with the New York Met, will join our SDSU students for the performance. Additionally, Frank Ticheli’s newest short symphony, Fantastic Dreams, will be premiered on the concert. The orchestra will perform Respighi’s Pines of Rome.

To conclude the season, FSO presents captivating music and mesmerizing visuals to celebrate two groundbreaking works by contemporary women composers. Mary Watkins; Five Movements in Color is a poignant and powerful reflection on the African-American experience, certain to stir the hearts of all who listen. Jocelyn Hagen’s Notebooks of Leonardo da Vinci, featuring Shrine of the Ages Choir and Master Chorale of Flagstaff, immerses you in the artist’s unique genius. This awe-inspiring multimedia concert experience masterfully combines live music with cutting-edge video syncing technology. Witness the brilliant sketches and words of da Vinci come to life before your eyes in a dazzling display of artistry and innovation.

Visionaries in Sound and Motion

The WashU Symphony Orchestra students will perform under the direction of Darwin Aquino, Conductor-in-Residence.  This performance will feature a performance of Debussy's Dances for Harp and String Orchestra performed by WashU faculty harpist Megan Stout.  This performance is dedicated to the memory of harpist Dr. Sue Taylor who served on faculty from 1997-2022.

The first Hmong story adapted for the operatic stage, St. Paul writer Kao Kalia Yang’s memoir The Song Poet comes to life in this world premiere. It tells the story of Yang’s family and her song poet father as war drives them from the mountains of Laos into a Thai refugee camp and ultimately on to the challenging world of life as a refugee. With his poetry, Kalia’s father inspires hope in his family, polishing their reality so that they might shine.
