The creative and destructive power of the elements has inspired composers of all eras to create captivating musical images. In the Four Sea Interludes, Benjamin Britten describes the conditions of the sea, ranging from the peaceful shimmer of dawn to the raging storm. In Frozen in Time, Avner Dorman retraces the geological formation of the continents, while in Heliosis , Hannah Eisendle uses shimmering orchestral sounds to depict the invigorating yet depressing effect of the sun's rays. In Johannes Brahms' Symphony No. 3, who develops increasingly eruptive energies from a three-note motif nucleus, music itself becomes an elemental force.

The PSO’s season features works inspired by the natural world: Beethoven’s “Pastoral” you can hear bucolic bird calls, the rolling of thunder, and the calling of a shepherd’s pipes from distant hills. Habibi’s new work was written as a meditation on climate change. Eisendle’s Heliosis, from the Greek word for the sun, is in turn blistering, scorching, and shimmering.

It's an unforgettable highlight of American comedy: Whoopie Goldberg, a washed-up showgirl on the run from gangsters, is forced to hide in a convent. To her own surprise, as well as that of the stern Mother Superior, she brings spiritual energy to the ossified convent through music.

The Philadelphia Inquirer calls young violinist Benjamin Beilman “monstrously talented.” He brings an engaging stage presence and effortless technique to the SLSO for the first time with Mozart’s playful Fifth Violin Concerto. Cristian Măcelaru, a St. Louis favorite, brings a study in contrasts. We feel the heat in Hannah Eisendle’s virtuosic heliosis, then warm ourselves by the autumnal glow and golden hue of Brahms’ richly pastoral Second Symphony.
