Clarinetist

Victor Goines born in New Orleans is an esteemed  jazz saxophonist, clarinetist, composer, and educator. He began on clarinet at age eight and later embraced saxophone in high school, drawing early inspiration from local jazz greats like Ellis Marsalis. Goines earned his Bachelor of Music Education from Loyola University New Orleans and completed his Master of Music at Virginia Commonwealth University. Since 1993, he’s been a vital voice in the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra and Wynton Marsalis Septet, lending his talents to celebrated recordings—including the Pulitzer-winning Blood on the Fields—and to the orchestral performances on landmark albums like Wynton Marsalis/Eric Clapton Play the Blues. Goines has  also recorded and performed with Ahmad Jamal, Ruth Brown, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Ray Charles, Bob Dylan, Dizzy Gillespie, Lenny Kravitz, Ellis Marsalis Jr, Branford Marsalis, Dianne Reeves, Willie Nelson, Marcus Roberts, Diana Ross, Stevie Wonder, more.

The evening will feature a vibrant selection of jazz pieces, announced live from the stage, performed by the all-star orchestra. Under the musical direction of Wynton Marsalis, the ensemble will explore the rich history of jazz, presenting both classic compositions and innovative new works. The lineup includes renowned musicians such as Ryan Kisor, Kenny Rampton, Marcus Printup on trumpets; Vincent Gardner, Chris Crenshaw, Elliot Mason on trombones; and a stellar saxophone section with Sherman Irby, Ted Nash, Victor Goines, Walter Blanding, and Paul Nedzela. The rhythm section boasts Dan Nimmer on piano, Carlos Henriquez on bass, and Obed Calvaire on drums.

This concert is a highlight of the Skaneateles Festival's Saturday evening concerts series, taking place at the scenic Robinson Pavilion at Anyela’s Vineyards. We take a detour through jazz-mad Europe. Darius Milhaud, Igor Stravinsky, and Kurt Weill all fell in love with American jazz, and their sassy music bears its stamp. Victor Goines, jazz clarinetist and president of Jazz St. Louis, rocks and wails in Stravinsky’s Ebony Concerto. Kurt Weill’s Suite from The Threepenny Opera includes hits like “Mack the Knife,” and the program ends with the honking horns and swaggering tunes of Gershwin’s An American in Paris.
