La Mirada Symphony presents Music of Eastern Europe: Old Worlds, New Worlds, a program that bridges tradition and innovation in one unforgettable afternoon. Audiences will experience Béla Bartók’s Hungarian Pictures, Alexander Arutunian’s brilliant Trumpet Concerto, and Antonín Dvořák’s beloved Symphony No. 9, “From the New World.”

The program also spotlights trumpet soloist David Pittell, whose performance of Arutunian’s concerto promises to be a highlight of the afternoon.

Dr. Jeremy McBain is a trumpet professor at the University of Texas at Tyler, where he teaches applied trumpet, brass chamber music, brass methods, and arranging. He previously taught at Eastern Illinois University, Millikin University, and Saint Mary’s College. An active performer, McBain is principal trumpet of the Texarkana Symphony and a member of the Rose City Brass Quintet and Jazz Orchestra. He has also played with numerous ensembles including the East Texas Symphony and the Bach Society of Houston, and has performed with artists like Doc Severinsen and Michael Brecker. He holds a DMA from the University of Illinois, with earlier degrees from the University of Michigan and University of Houston.

Tchaikovsky’s fifth symphony is a highly personal and emotionally charged unfurling of ominous “fate” themes transforming into exultant triumph. Alexander Arutiunian combined the post-Romantic Russian tradition with Armenian folk elements, qualities readily evident in his beloved 1950 Trumpet Concerto, a cornerstone of brass repertoire for its dance elements and challenging cadenza. Schreker composed his Romantic Suite during his prestigious position as director of the Hochschule für Musik in Berlin and is known for creating impressionistic sound worlds of ever-changing colors and moods. The Tanz (Dance) movement of his suite is a grand finale of orchestral fireworks and mercurial rhythms.

This recital is set to take place on Wednesday, May 15, 2024, at 6:00pm CDT in the prestigious Galvin Recital Hall. Ari Rios will be accompanied by an array of talented musicians including Marco Alvarez (tenor), Lilie Shlyak, Oliver Zhang, and Tehya Shapiro (trumpet), Colin Akers (horn), Liam Melvin (trombone), Andrew Ng (bass trombone), and Yoko Yamada-Selvaggio (piano).

The program promises a diverse repertoire with highlights including Alexander Arutiunian's Trumpet Concerto in A-flat Major, a unique arrangement of Franz Schubert's Ave Maria by Ariana Rios, Fernand Andrieu's Concertino pour deux cornets et piano, Op. 21, and Oskar Böhme's Sextet for Brass, Op. 30.

We conclude our season with a salute to the one hundredth birthday of former CUSO Music Director Paul Vermel, including music such as Brahms’ elegant Variations on a Theme by Haydn that Maestro Vermel conducted with the orchestra. John Hagstrom, long-time member of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra trumpet section, will dazzle you in the tuneful and energetic Trumpet Concerto by Alexander Arutiunian. Paul Hindemith’s brilliant Symphonic Metamorphosis is a tour de force for the symphony orchestra and will bring our season to a rousing conclusion!

This concert features solo trumpeter Andrew Balio performing Arutunian’s Trumpet Concerto. Mr. Balio performed a solo recital during the pandemic for our virtual concerts in 2021. We welcome him back and are excited to hear him ‘live’. We open with Patrice Rushen’s iconic Mine Eyes Have Seen the Glory. This work is dedicated to and inspired by the memory of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., and includes a quote from his I Have A Dream speech. We conclude with Brahms’ Symphony No.1 in C minor.

For 15 years, the paths of Liebrecht Vanbeckevoort and Casco Phil have been intimately entwined. In addition to a musical partnership, a close friendship developed since 2008 thanks to Ludwig van Beethoven. To celebrate that shared path, we will pull out all the stops in 2023 and make the composer the guest of honour at the birthday party. Throughout the year, he will be at the centre of our collaborations. We perform his Seventh Symphony and his Coriolan Overture with Michiel Delanghe as guest conductor and Liebrecht then joins us for his Third Pianoconcerto. A formidable work that draws you right in from the very first notes, thanks to the lightning-fast effort with which the soloist immediately kicks off. Like a rocket, the piano soars into the sky, only to land again, gurgling and full of vibrating ornamentation, passing the baton to the orchestra.

Emmy-award winner and Grammy nominee Miguel Harth-Bedoya will conduct the CSO in a program featuring two works by Maurice Ravel. Harth-Bedoya is the Music Director Laureate of the Fort Worth Symphony Orchestra. He currently has several appointments directing higher education orchestral studies programs, and, as a sought-after conductor, has appeared with many major international and American orchestras throughout his career.

Born and raised in the American South, William Grant Still was a Guggenheim Fellow and earned several important commissions from the likes of the Cleveland Symphony and the 1939 New York World’s Fair. A celebrated composer renowned for his artistic excellence, he was the first African American to have a symphony performed by a leading American orchestra, the first to conduct a major American orchestra, and the first to have an opera performed by a major opera company. His Serenade is performed on this concert program in a nod to the CSO’s Project Aurora to elevate the music of superbly talented yet traditionally overlooked Black artists.

Bengtson will be accompanied by the Finnish conductor Eva Ollikainen and the Radio Symphony Orchestra, who will also perform a world premiere by the Estonian composer Mirjam Tally and a suite based on Richard Strauss' modernist and psychological opera Elektra.
