J.S. Bach, known as the great master, wrote more than 200 cantatas, and UMD Choral Activities aims to sing them all in this series of short performances led by conductors in the graduate program. This performance will feature BWV 214, Tönet, ihr Pauken! Erschallet, Trompeten! (Sound, you drums! Ring out, you trumpets!).

The story of the jester Rigoletto, his naive daughter Gilda, and the treacherous Duke of Mantua was nearly banned by censors upon its debut, but it went on to become one of Verdi’s most championed works. In particular, pieces like “Caro nome,” “La donna é mobile,” and “Bella figlia dell’amore” propelled opera forward during Verdi’s lifetime and challenged and inspired the audience of yesterday and today. The legendary storm music in the final act carries all of Verdi’s tumultuous passion as he creates one of opera’s most evocative scenes. 

Rigoletto

The Grand Opera House

Rigoletto serves as the court jester for the licentious Duke of Mantua.  His life is filled with secrecy and pain, as he tries to protect his beloved daughter Gilda from the Duke's predatory advances. Trapped in a web of betrayal and vengeance, Rigoletto's desperate attempts to save Gilda from tragedy ultimately lead to a heart-rending climax and a powerful exploration of human emotions and the consequences of one's actions.
