Georgian-French pianist Khatia Buniatishvili also joins us to play George Gershwin’s Rhapsody in Blue — marking the 100th anniversary of this legendary orchestral jazz work.

Savor Tchaikovsky's haunting Symphony Pathétique, named for the French word for dramatic or moving. With soaring melodies and orchestral might, the Tchaikovsky Sixth always brings down the house. Also, the internationally acclaimed violin virtuoso Anne Akiko Meyers joins the Grant Park Orchestra for the Latin dance-inspired Fandango by Mexican composer Arturo Márquez. And guest conductor Ludovic Morlot presents Color Shape Transmission by Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón.

WMP’s electrifying season finale ‘Music of the Americas’ features a splendid array of music from North, Central and South America. Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón’s (currently based in Brooklyn, New York) work has been described as “wistfully idiosyncratic and contemplative". Her piece Tornasol (Spanish for sunflower) is a work that focuses on the vibrancy of color and how it changes through scientific experimentation, all portrayed in various sections of the orchestra. In contrast, guest artist Colin Davin will perform Concierto del Sur, a masterpiece for guitar and orchestra by Mexican composer Manuel Ponce. The second half of the program includes music that is lively, rhythmic, and exciting. El Salón México by Aaron Copland depicts scenes and imagery from his experience at a popular dance hall in Mexico City. Four Dance Episodes from Alberto Ginastera’s ballet La Estancia incorporates Argentinian folk music that represent dance, character, and settings of life on the ranch. We conclude the program with Danzon No. 2 by Arturo Marquez – a seductive, yet melancholy and irresistible ballroom dance inspired by the Cuban Habanera performed by full orchestra.

The George Washington Masonic National Memorial

“Intersection” features music by composers who explore the terrain between traditional genre boundaries. The program features Anna Meredith’s astonishing 1980s electronica meets ’90s clubland composition Tuggemo, the first movement of Edgar Meyer’s virtuosic Concert Duo for Violin and Bass, Courtney Bryan’s gospel and jazz-flavored fusion of the sacred and secular, Soli Deo Gloria for two guitars, and the world premiere of Dmitri Tymoczko’s Nerds, for chamber ensemble. The evening concludes with Angélica Negrón’s dóabin, inspired by the invented language of a pair of twins; acclaimed composer Tyshawn Sorey’s shimmering, lyrical work, For Fred Lerdahl; and avant-garde icon György Ligeti’s minimalist composition, Six Bagatelles, for woodwind quintet.

For the ninth year of PIVOT, guest curator Gabriel Kahane and friends dig deep into music that asks enduring and enlightening questions about our ever-changing world and seeks the uplift of answers rooted in shared experience. Gabriel Kahane is a musician and storyteller whose work exists at the intersection of art and social practice, and “his music is suffused with idiosyncratic, enriched tonal harmony…he is one of the finest, most searching songwriters of the day” (The New Yorker). Grammy-winning vocal band Roomful of Teeth can seemingly make anything cool, “From death metal to throat singing to alpine yodeling, the experimental group is changing what it means to harmonize” (The New Yorker).

Context is crucial in New Century’s first collaboration with the students of the San Francisco Conservatory of Music, featuring music that harnesses the sights and sounds of nature. American violinist Alexi Kenney leads the combined forces of New Century and SFCM in this unique multimedia program that immerses the audience on a journey from the Puerto Rican beaches of Angélica Negrón’s Marejada to the stark beauty of Joshua Tree National Park in Gabriella Smith’s Desert Ecology. A lush garden of sound blooms during the second half as our combined string ensemble performs Georges Enescu’s romantic masterwork, the Octet for Strings.

Puerto Rican-born composer and multi-instrumentalist Angélica Negrón writes “wistfully idiosyncratic and contemplative” (WQXR) music for accordions, robotic instruments, toys and electronics as well as for chamber ensembles, orchestras, choir and film. In this new collaboration with visual and botanical artist Sophie Parker, she’ll premiere new songs accompanied by playable sculptures created for this one-night-only performance. Angélica Negrón’s Artist Residency is generously underwritten by The Roz Lasker Artist Mentorship Fund.

A group of today’s most rhythmically dazzling composers show that anything is possible in the hands of Sō Percussion—an ensemble that has “set the New York standard for percussion innovation” (The New Yorker). Hear New York premieres by MacArthur Genius and renowned jazz pianist Vijay Iyer; award-winning choreographer and percussionist Olivier Tarpaga, who will perform alongside the group; and the boldly imaginative multi-instrumentalist Angélica Negrón. The program also includes an original and evolving work by founding member Jason Treuting.

GRAMMY® Award-nominated composer and bandoneon player JP Jofre stars in this imaginative juxtaposition of contemporary and classic influences. Performing his own concerto for cello and bandoneon with acclaimed soloist Michael Katz, Jofre’s mesmerizing artistry brings new sound worlds to the historic expanses of the Michigan Theater. Guest conductor Joshua Gersen directs music by the “wistfully idiosyncratic and contemplative” composer and multi-instrumentalist Angélica Negrón, before Brahm’s masterful Symphony No. 4 closes the program in a poignant summary of the composer’s worldview and lifetime of achievement.

Luisi leads the DSO in the first Bravo! Vail Symphonic Commissioning Project premiere—Angélica Negrón’s Arquitecta featuring Columbian-Canadian vocalist Lido Pimienta—in addition to the Bravo! Vail debut of cellist Jan Vogler in Haydn’s Cello Concerto in C major and Franck’s Symphony in D minor.   

The Dallas Symphony Orchestra delivers uplifting, entertaining, and enriching musical experiences worldwide. This summer, the Orchestra returns to Bravo! Vail with a rich lineup that includes classical favorites and exciting pops programs.

This weekend, Fabio Luisi and the DSO bring out one of the first works in which Beethoven takes on the heroic ideal, shaking his fist at the world, with his Piano Concerto No. 3 performed by pianist Francecso Piemontesi. We journey from the youthful optimism of Brahms’s First Piano Concerto (performed earlier in the season) to his Fourth Symphony, filled with grandeur as he presents his final essay in symphonic form. Yet, like all great tragedies, the Fourth is cathartic which might explain the popularity of his dark, troubling last symphonic work. To open, DSO’s Composer-in-Residence Angélica Negrón offers the world premiere of her work for voice and orchestra, with Canadian Colombian singer, curator and interdisciplinary artist Lido Pimienta, describing the maternal spirit and the weight of caring for family and home.

Former BPO music director Maximiano Valdés returns to conduct a thrilling and eclectic program with Sterling Elliott, winner of the 2019 Sphinx Competition, performing Saint-Saëns’ intriguing Cello Concerto. Composer Angélica Negrón, known for her use of atypical instrumentation like robotics and toys, introduces an inventive mechanical percussion ensemble in “Me he perdido.” Finally, Bruckner’s rhythmically exciting Sixth Symphony makes use of the full breadth of orchestral colors.

Graduation recitals display the skill and passion of Curtis Institute of Music students on the cusp of professional musicianship. Teddy Abrams conducts Philharmonia Fantastique, a vivid and imaginative concerto for orchestra and animated film created by composer Mason Bates, Oscar-winning sound designer Gary Rydstrom (Jurassic Park, Titanic), and animator Jim Capobianco (Finding Nemo). Leonard Bernstein’s crowd-pleasing Symphonic Dances from West Side Story closes the program with Broadway panache.

In this special Power to the People! concert, Dudamel conducts the most recognized symphony—proudly based on the blues—by the Dean of African American Composers, William Grant Still, one of the leading lights of the Harlem Renaissance. The program also boasts a world premiere from the multi-talented Puerto Rico-born composer Angélica Negrón, who has already composed for a vast range of ensembles and projects, including scores for film, documentary, ballet, and theater, as well as many orchestral works and chamber music.

The Seattle Symphony spotlights famed Finnish composer Jean Sibelius with his popular Second Symphony. Conductor Emeritus Ludovic Morlot joins the orchestra to bring this magnificent work to life, full of sweeping melodies and rich orchestration. A bold, world premiere work by Puerto Rican-born composer and multi-instrumentalist Angélica Negrón responds to Sibelius and captivating violinist Isabelle Faust performs a sensational violin concerto by Igor Stravinsky.

Violinist Johnny Gandelsman’s solo performance pairs the unaccompanied Cello Suite No. 3 by J.S. Bach with newly commissioned works as part of his This Is America project. Celebrating the country’s rich cultural tapestry and myriad perspectives, the program also features composers Clarice Assad, Rhiannon Giddens, Tyshawn Sorey and Conrad Tao. The Boston Globe describes Gandelsman as “a delightfully unconventional fiddler…with a balletic lightness of touch and a sense of whimsy and imagination that are rare.”

A distinctly female creative voice narrates this beguiling program highlighting the generative power of telling stories. Grammy-nominated Haitian American vocalist, flutist, and composer Nathalie Joachim teams with American composer, performer, and media artist Pamela Z, culminating in world premieres of music they have written for each other to perform.

Enjoy an afternoon of Latin American music, highlighted by the Guitar Concerto of Mexican composer Ponce featuring local favorite Kenneth Meyer. Music by Puerto Rican composer Angélica Negrón, Chilean composer Enrique Soro, and Argentinian composer Piazolla rounds out the concert. The dance and folk-inspired themes of these pieces will move and inspire you. This performance is a companion to the New World Symphony and More concert on February 15.

Experience the profound intensity and emotional depth of classical music with the Omaha Symphony's presentation of "Negrón, Grieg & Shostakovich 5." This captivating concert series will take place at the prestigious Holland Center, with performances scheduled for Friday, May 30, and Saturday, May 31, both at 7:30 PM.

Under the baton of Music Director Ankush Kumar Bahl, the concert opens with the mesmerizing "Moriviví" by Angélica Negrón. Premiered in 2022 by the Los Angeles Philharmonic, this orchestral feature traces the evolution of a shy succulent native to Puerto Rico, showcasing Negrón's innovative and evocative composition style.

The concert continues with the renowned pianist Joyce Yang taking the stage to perform Edvard Grieg's glorious Piano Concerto. Yang's vivid and beautiful playing, praised by the New York Times, promises to breathe new life into this beloved masterpiece.

The evening will culminate with Dmitri Shostakovich's Symphony No. 5, a work of intense emotion, drive, and instinct. Recognized as one of the greatest symphonies ever written, Shostakovich's Fifth Symphony offers a powerful and moving close to the 2024/25 season.
