Winner of the 2014 Thelonious Monk International Trumpet Competition, Chicago-born trumpeter Marquis Hill has, in a comparatively short time, established his well-deserved reputation as a leading figure among today’s crop of most adventurous jazz musicians. He returns with compositions from his new album and band project, Composers Collective, featuring an all-star ensemble that includes keyboardist Mike King, bassist Junius Paul, vibraphonist Joel Ross, and drummer Makaya McCraven.

Outstanding activist, educator, and drummer Terri Lyne Carrington and her band Social Science join Celebrity Series this season, two years after earning a Grammy nomination for their album, Waiting Game. Carrington is a 2023 Grammy awardee for her New Standards, Vol. 1, a kindred project to Social Science that pulls forward the work of neglected female songwriters to create a new catalogue of jazz standards. Special guests Chelsey Green and Toki Wright join the group for a multi-dimensional vocal and instrumental musical experience.

Renowned Berklee faculty from the Brass and Woodwind Departments come together for an evening of unique and captivating music. 

The concert includes performances by Steve Davis, Marquis Hill, Billy Buss, Marcus Rojas, Sheila Abate, Nadje Noordhuis, and Phil Grenadier from the Brass Department and Lauren Sevian, Godwin Louis, Edmar Colon, Harry Skoler, Anne Drummond, and George Garzone from the Woodwind Department. 

Brass and Woodwind Faculty Showcase

A continuation of Dana Hall’s 2015 collaboration with Cheryl Lynn Bruce and Kerry James Marshall, this program reconvenes and commissions Hall and Bruce to further develop and restage the work. Hypocrisy of Justice explores inequities within systems and institutions, along with lived experiences of confinement, redemption, hope, and home. In addition to two performances, there will be a free day-long symposium on October 8.

Trumpeter and composer Marquis Hill has made it his mission to break down the barriers between contemporary and classic jazz, hip-hop, R&B, Chicago house, and neo-soul. The Chicago native and 2014 winner of the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz Competition has performed as a member of the Chicago Jazz Orchestra, an in-demand sideman, and a bandleader, earning accolades with his working band, the Blacktet. His collaborations have included such artists as Marcus Miller, Dee Dee Bridgewater, Boney James, Kurt Elling, Joe Lovano, and Makaya McCraven. Hill’s latest album, Composers Collective: Beyond the Jukebox was released in August 2024.
