A No. 1 album and a double Grammy-win in 2023 put Samara Joy on the map, establishing the young American artist as ‘the next jazz sensation’ and ‘a legend in the making’, regularly compared to Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughan. Fresh from another double win at this year’s Grammys, Joy makes a much-anticipated Proms debut, introducing audiences to her electric combination of youthful energy and old-soul musical style with classic songs and unique twists on instrumental classics from across jazz and its fringes, from bossa nova to the Great American Songbook. She salutes figures including Sarah Vaughan, Ella Fitzgerald, Duke Ellington, Billie Holiday, Charles Mingus and Oscar Peterson.

Santtu Conducts Sibelius & Nielsen

Join us at the Royal Festival Hall on Sunday, 29th September 2024, at 3pm for an extraordinary concert experience, "Santtu conducts Sibelius and Nielsen." This event promises to be a highlight of the Philharmonia's Nordic Soundscapes series, featuring the talented Santtu-Matias Rouvali as conductor, with the acclaimed Bomsori Kim on violin.

The programme for the afternoon includes Sibelius's enchanting "The Oceanides," Nielsen's bold Violin Concerto, and the UK premiere of Miho Hazama's "What the Wind Brings," accompanied by underwater film footage of the Nordic coast. The concert will conclude with Sibelius's Symphony No. 3, a work full of warm energy and captivating melodies.

This concert is not just a performance but an exploration of the Nordic landscape's beauty and mystery, both above and beneath the sea. The inclusion of short documentary films provides a unique visual and auditory experience, bringing the Nordic coastline's underwater worlds to life on the Royal Festival Hall's vast screen.

Tickets are priced between £15 and £75, with priority booking available for Friends of the Philharmonia. General booking opens at 10am on Tuesday, 23rd April. Grammy–nominated composer and conductor Miho Hazama(Opens in a new window) is one of the most promising and talented composers/arrangers of her generation. Lauded in DownBeat as one of “25 for the Future,” Hazama creates inventive, complex, and surprising compositions for m_unit, the 13-piece jazz chamber orchestra that she leads.

Principal horn of the Ann Arbor Symphony and a former member of the Philadelphia Orchestra and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra, alumnus Adam Unsworth makes his recital debut as a member of the Bienen School faculty. Unsworth is also a member of the Grammy-nominated Gil Evans Project big band and has made guest appearances with Alarm Will Sound, the Meridian Arts Ensemble, and Ensemble Signal. He is featured as soloist on the Boston Modern Orchestra Project’s 2024 release Masks and Machines and has five recordings as an ensemble leader to his credit.

Japanese-American Miho Hazama is considered one of the world's most exciting voices in big band jazz. With a musical palette that seamlessly weaves together jazz, classical music and contemporary expression, Miho Hazama has made a name for herself as an innovative and groundbreaking force. Since 2019, she has been the chief conductor of the DR Big Band (Danish Radio's Big Band), and since 2020 also guest conductor of the Metropole Orkest, one of Europe's leading orchestras with a strong profile in cross-genre collaborations.
