Experience Jonny Greenwood’s immersive work ‘605 Years of Reverb’ in this unique event, set in the stunning surroundings of Manchester Cathedral. Organists Anna Lapwood and James McVinnie team up to take on this immense piece, written by Jonny Greenwood to commemorate and celebrate the unique legacy of organs in historic buildings. Drawing upon influences from Indian music, the work gradually builds in texture and complexity, slowly introducing new musical ideas and striking new sound worlds. ‘Melodies in Indian music are often thought of as circular, rather than linear,’ says Greenwood, ‘You’re climbing on to a moving wheel, not starting and ending in silence.’ A truly unique experience – music will fill the space and light will move around Manchester Cathedral as the sun sets throughout the event, ending as darkness falls. Join for the full eight hour experience or for a timed slot, available every two hours.

The acclaimed string quartet of three Danes and one Norwegian return to perform a wide-ranging program from Ravel’s String Quartet to Jonny Greenwood’s Suite for String Quartet from the film There Will Be Blood.

The Danish String Quartet has established its pre-eminence among the world’s finest string quartets with its impeccable musicianship, sophisticated artistry, and, above all, an unmatched ability to play as one. Their performances are characterized by a rare musical spontaneity, giving audiences the sense of hearing even treasured canon repertoire as if for the first time.

Over three previous appearances, they have captivated audiences with thoughtfully curated programs, peerless ensemble playing, and the unmistakable warmth and camaraderie that come from more than two decades of performing together.

This concert celebrates Jonny Greenwood’s love of orchestral string writing. In Water, the warmth of the Hallé strings envelopes two flutes and an Indian tanpura on a journey of rippling colour. Lutosławski dedicated his moving Musique funèbre to the pioneering composer Bela Bartók whilst Steve Reich’s lyrical Pulse is a tenderly contemplative, yet constantly pulsating, work. Jonny Greenwood’s groundbreaking Horror Vacui, performed by Daniel Pioro, ‘the violinist making classical music cool’ (The Telegraph), plays upon the artistic concept of ‘the fear of empty spaces’ to astonishing effect. Using the full sonic potential of the solo violin and extensive string orchestra, he creates an eerily liminal soundscape, building in atmosphere and intensity throughout each movement. These are string instruments as you’ve never heard them before.

One of the world’s most adventurous and versatile chamber ensembles, the Danish String Quartet returns to Ann Arbor with a unique program that includes works by Stravinsky, Beethoven, and film composer and Radiohead founding member Jonny Greenwood. In addition, they’ll perform arrangements of traditional folk tunes and original compositions that trace musical pathways across the North Sea, underlining the group’s belief that “folk tunes are not just part of our repertoire, but an important element of our identity as musicians.”

The first of three Sinfonietta Nova concerts will feature London Sinfonietta's Jonathan Morton. The concert will take you on a journey through the raw and palpable power of Krzysztof Penderecki, the eerie and unsettling undercurrent of the Oscar-winning soundtrack 'There Will Be Blood' to the unistic and deeply layered style of composer Zygmunt Krauze, who will sit at the piano.

Reich’s iconic Clapping Music, its instrument just human hands, starts this not-to-be-missed event. Runner formed a double premiere at Covent Garden in 2016, when the Royal Ballet danced Wayne McGregor’s Multiverse to the score which the New York Times described as ‘a calmly luminous orchestral piece.’ The Four Sections refers both to the four orchestral families and its four varied movements, Reich creating a contrapuntal web filled with melodic patterns. The recent Reich/Richter was conceived as a concert work, as well as music for the film Moving Picture (946-3) by visual artist, Gerhard Richter. Reich found his inspiration in the pulsating, color shifting, glowing stripes of the film’s opening sequence.

“A lot has been written about the biggest music scandal in history during the world premiere of Stravinsky’s Rite of Spring 1913. He was 31 years old. One year before World War One Stravinsky blew up the music world. Away with traditions and lineage. Away with Beethoven, Brahms, Wagner and Mahler. A never heard primal force burst out of the massive orchestra in Paris’ Theatre des Champs-Elysees.
