As the MSO celebrates 100 years this season, it seemed only fitting to bring some of my MSO colleagues with me on stage to showcase their talent and our unique pairing. While the organ can be quite a loud instrument, it can also be used in a softer and more subtle way. With works like Handel’s G minor Organ Concerto and movements from Mozart’s Clarinet Concerto and Coleridge-Taylor’s Nonet, this program will demonstrate the versatility and more intimate side of our instrument. I’m also excited that the audience will get a chance to hear many of the musicians they hear in the orchestra perform some works as soloists with the organ. An Evening of Chamber Music and Organ

The Ensemble Masques, led by harpsichordist Olivier Fortin, opens this season's harpsichord focus with 18th-century French chamber music. The program includes several solo harpsichord concertos by Baroque master Jean-Philippe Rameau and his contemporaries.

The beautiful, dark red bassoons are given their rightful place at the front of the stage in this chamber concert, which features Dutch Kees Olthius's extremely welcoming study of the versatile-sounding deep woodwinds. Here is inventive and melodious play with rhythm and sound in a kind of double concerto for bassoon and contrabassoon with string quintet. It will be completely dark red on stage when four bassoons play an arrangement of Michel Corrette's Le Phenix – French baroque in new clothes. But the brightest of the woodwinds will also be involved when the flute as a soloist in Joan Towers' 'Rising' examines the tonal movement upwards in every imaginable way; how does music move up and what happens when you get all the way up there?
