To top it all off, the La Crosse Youth Symphony joins the LSO, side-by-side, for Rossini's sparking overture to The Barber of Seville -- used to wonderful effect in the great 1979 Midwestern coming-of-age classic comedy, Breaking Away.

Erich Korngold composed on both sides: film and classical, and by winning the first Academy Award for film music, he opened the door for composers who have devoted themselves entirely to film. The concert will showcase the development of film music from the now classic Oscar-winning melodies of Between Two Worlds, Casablanca, Gone with the Wind, Ben Hur or Star Wars and Harry Potter by the legendary, Oscar-winning record holder John Williams, who celebrated his 92nd birthday this year.

A secret concert then, somewhat unlikely in its content. After 21 years as Executive and Artistic Director of Konserthuset Stockholm, Stefan Forsberg is retiring. This is commemorated with a concert that unfortunately we can’t say much about. It's all hush-hush and antics when a beloved director is bid farewell in grand style with music.

From romantic, savage, and epic American dramas to Japanese anime fantasy, The Hollywood Sound explores film scores from the past 80 years. VSO Concertmaster, Katherine Winterstein, performs Korngold's 1945 film score-infused violin concerto to complete the concert.

The Sound of Nature: The British composer George Fenton has created an equally impressive soundtrack for the BBC's visually stunning nature documentary series. His "Planet Earth" music is performed live in concert, surrounded by the other elements of fire, air and water. The German baroque grandmaster Georg Friedrich Händel will perform his "Fireworks Music", which was commissioned by the British King George II and first impressed audiences as open-air music in London's Green Park in 1749. The great US film composer Max Steiner breathes a completely different atmosphere in his title music for the legendary film classic "Gone with the Wind" and the stirring Czech romantic Antonín Dvořák also contributes a spookily beautiful fairytale water music with his symphonic poem "The Water Sprite".
