Cellist

The festival concludes with a celebration of Vienna’s most accomplished composers of the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Arnold Schoenberg and Erich Korngold were among the great wave of artists who fled Europe’s wars to settle in the United States. The traditions of the Viennese masters continue to be passed down to young American composers such as Alistair Coleman, an alum of LCCMF’s Young Composer Seminar.

While our Festival Artists are among the world’s great chamber ensemble musicians, they can also dazzle as soloists!  All ages are invited to the hour-long performance, where adults and children can learn about the possibilities and range of each of these instruments in the hands of these virtuosos!

Second Saturday

Conductor and pianist Ignat Solzhenitsyn will take us on a tour of recapitulations across Beethoven’s sonata forms—in his piano works, symphonies, and chamber music—investigating both the staggering variety and the common threads that unite Beethoven’s approaches to recapitulation. Solzhenitsyn will show how the Master’s unparalleled dramatic intuition identified this crucial tipping point in sonata structure, simultaneously elevating it to an architectural apotheosis unseen before or since.

Festival Wednesday

The 2023 LCCMF Young Artists are among the finest string players of their generation. They will explore solo and duo works with the guidance of festival artists throughout the week.

From the mid-18th century through the beginning of the 20th, Vienna was home to many of the greatest composers, including Haydn, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, and Schoenberg. These legendary creative geniuses led the evolution and revolutions of classical composition. Come to learn about traditions passed through the generations and the groundbreaking elements that led to the sophistication of the music of today.

Festival Monday

Few artists are as synonymous with New York City as the supremely talented George Gershwin and Leonard Bernstein. Their irrepressible spirits established New York as the place where different musical styles and cultures could fuse together seamlessly - the city where “King of Swing” Benny Goodman could perform Béla Bartók’s Hungarian folk style in the world’s greatest concert hall, Carnegie Hall. The vibrancy of New York gave rise to inspirational figures like Ellen Taaffe Zwilich, the first female composer to win the Pulitzer Prize.

Concert I: The Rhythm of New York City

Student musicians perform for Artistic Director Soovin Kim and festival artists Hye-Jin Kim and Fred Sherry during a morning of violin and cello masterclasses taking place simultaneously. The audience can wander from room to room and observe these illuminating sessions.
