Conducted by Donato Cabrera, California Symphony performs at the Lesher Center, featuring guest soloist Robert Thies.

Tortured by comparisons to Beethoven, it took Brahms 21 years to finish writing his first symphony. Some critics hailed the piece as “Beethoven’s Tenth” in recognition of Brahms’ ultimate triumph.

Brahms Obsessions

The iconic Overture to Marriage of Figaro from legendary Austrian composer Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart will open the evening, followed by the Pulcinella Suite from the late-Romantic and early modern era Russian composer Igor Stravinsky. According to Maestro Nowak, Mozart and Stravinsky are two composers “who just go well together.” The evening closes with guest piano soloist Robert Thies returning for a performance of Ludwig Van Beethoven’s Piano Concerto No. 4 in G major, Op. 58, a piece which exemplifies Beethoven as both a master of the neoClassical style and transformative Romantic figure.

After a 13-year hiatus, the COS is proud to have pianist Robert Thies return to Central Oregon performing Beethoven’s Fourth Piano Concerto. Robert, a Gold Medal Winner at the International Prokofiev Competition in Russia, has been described by the LA Times as “a pianist of unerring warm-toned refinement, revealing judicious glimmers of power.” The rousing “Jubilee” from American composer George Whitefield Chadwick’s Symphonic Sketches will open the second half of the concert followed by the iconic Firebird Suite, the composition that launched the storied career of twentieth-century musical pioneer, Igor Stravinsky.

An Intimate Evening of Classical Piano

San Bernardino Valley College Auditorium

Join us for the world-premiere performance of MYTHOLOGIES, a genre-defying, visionary musical work featuring a piano soloist, three vocalists, and narration.
