Two of the classical music world’s biggest rising stars, Sheku Kenneh-Mason and Isata Kanneh-Mason, perform for the first time together in Carnegie Hall’s grandest concert hall: Stern Auditorium / Perelman Stage. In this afternoon performance, they showcase their remarkable artistic rapport in a program of cello sonatas by Felix Mendelssohn, Fauré, and Poulenc, as well as a new work by Natalie Klouda. The siblings’ 2022 sold-out duo concert of sonatas in Zankel Hall was praised for its “sense of togetherness, of shared sensibility [that] permeated the whole concert” (The New York Times). “This truly felt like a concert of duets.” Performed at their best, these pieces are true collaborative showcases.

Bampton Classical Opera presents its annual St Beornwald concert, an eclectic programme of music based around two majestic works by Mozart and Poulenc for piano and wind, played by artistic director Jeremy Gray and the wind instruments of the Orchestra of Bampton Classical Opera.

Mozart’s beautiful quintet, for an unusual scoring, was considered by the composer at the time to be ‘the best thing I have written in my life’.  Poulenc’s trio, his first major chamber work, is noted for its depth of feeling, with touches of Mozartian flavour and echoes of other composers’ styles yet retaining its youthful verve.

Composed in the wake of the loss of Mussorgsky’s dear friend—architect and artist Viktor Hartmann—this timeless work captures the essence of each of Hartmann’s pictures with breathtaking clarity and depth. Acclaimed pianist Anne-Marie McDermott takes the stage with a group of world-class wind players, offering classics written for various combinations of instruments. To close the program, the full cast gathers for Poulenc’s effervescent Sextet for Winds and Piano, which the composer described as “an homage to the wind instruments I have loved from the moment I began composing.”

‘Theirs is a marriage of wondrous colours and dextrous aplomb, subtly balanced to make a musical performance sound as one’, commented Music and Arts of the married couple, whose meeting at the 1997 Hamamatsu Competition has led to a remarkable musical as well as marital partnership. In addition to original works for the medium, arrangements include Ravel’s of Debussy’s orchestral masterpiece and their own of music by the Argentine master of nuevo tango.

Three 20th-century works prominently featuring the oboe. Martinů’s Quartet was composed in New York in 1947. Poulenc’s delightful duo Sonata (1962) was his final work, described by a New York Times critic as ‘a paradoxical mix of the elegiac, the suave and the clever’; the composer dedicated it to the memory of Prokofiev, the material of whose 1924 Quintet largely derives from his ballet, Trapeze.

Chamber Ensemble in Residence at Wigmore Hall, the Nash has been presenting an annual themed series there since 1979. The ensemble’s 2023–24 season at Wigmore Hall was entitled ‘Songs from my Homeland – Music from the Czech Lands with works by Brahms’, and the annual Nash Inventions concert on 26 March 2024 was a celebration and remembrance of the life and music of Sir Harrison Birtwistle. There was also a concert dedicated to the artists and to the music performed in the Theresienstadt Concentration Camp 1941–1945. Tragically, many of these wonderful artists were murdered at Auschwitz.

For the artistic director of the BR Choir, Peter Dijkstra, this is a good reason to present a fine selection of choral music by four Frenchmen. The focus is on Gabriel Fauré's musical requiem, which is one of the great requiem settings of the classical-romantic tradition.

Poulenc’s Gloria, with its unexpected blend of secular and sacred sounds, fascinated (and scandalized) audiences from its first performances. “While writing it I had in mind those Crozzoli frescoes with angels sticking out their tongues,” the composer remarked. Lili Boulanger’s impressionistic “Of a Spring Morning” introduces the program with a bright festivity. Jean-Marie Zeitouni, a conductor of “ebullience and infectious enjoyment” (Boulder Weekly), leads this vivacious performance, which invites the Milwaukee Symphony Chorus and soprano Joélle Harvey to the stage for an evening of exultation that will keep music-lovers enraptured to its final whispered “Amen.”

The first ballet created for the Company by Principal Dancer Tiler Peck, Concerto for Two Pianos, named after the melodic Poulenc score, delighted audiences at its premiere in the winter of 2024 with its sweeping energy and effortless elegance. The dance returns accompanied by two pieces new to the repertory, notably comprising NYCB’s first program of ballets all choreographed by women. Signs was created by Gianna Reisen for the School of American Ballet’s annual Workshop Performances in 2022 to selections of music from Philip Glass.

The 2024 Fall Fashion Gala continues to pair couture with contemporary choreography: a world premiere from Caili Quan marking her debut work for NYCB, a Company premiere by Gianna Reisen originally made for the School of American Ballet in 2022, and Tiler Peck’s acclaimed Winter 2024 creation Concerto for Two Pianos.

Embark on an interstellar musical journey with the York Symphony Orchestra as they kick off their 2024-25 season with "Star Wars & The Planets." This captivating concert, under the baton of the esteemed conductor Lawrence Golan, promises an evening of cosmic exploration through the power of music. The performance is scheduled for Saturday, October 5, 2024, at 7:30 PM EST, taking place at the prestigious Appell Center for the Performing Arts.

The program for the evening is a blend of celestial wonder and cinematic thrill, featuring Gustav Holst’s iconic suite "The Planets." Each movement of this masterpiece offers a unique auditory exploration of the seven planets, from the mystifying Neptune to the war-mongering Mars. Adding to the excitement, John Williams’ legendary "Main Title" from Star Wars will transport the audience to the far reaches of the galaxy, celebrating one of the most recognizable themes in film history.

The concert also highlights the work of Arturo Márquez with "Paisajes bajo el signo de cosmos" (Landscapes Under the Sign of the Cosmos), a piece that exudes compelling melodies and pervasive rhythm, influenced by Márquez's Mexican roots. Additionally, the concert features Francis Poulenc's "Concerto for Two Pianos & Orchestra," a piece known for its charming melodies and jazz themes, performed by pianists Kenneth Osowski and Gretchen Dekker.

Before the concert, attendees are invited to a Pre-Concert Talk from 6:30-7:00 PM, where Assistant Conductor Rebekah O’Brien will provide enlightening insights into the evening's program. This talk is free for all ticket holders and takes place at the front of the Appell Center’s Strand Theatre stage.

For those unable to attend in person, digital access to the concert is available, providing a 48-hour window to enjoy the performance from the comfort of home, starting Sunday at noon through Tuesday at noon following the concert.

The universally admired Swedish artist received the Female Singer of the Year Award at the International Opera Awards in 2018, the same year that she was awarded the title of Court Singer by Carl XVI Gustaf of Sweden. “This is playing that sorts out the men from the boys. In fact, I wonder if Paganini would have equaled him,” wrote Gramaphone. The Greek violinist made his Aspen debut in 2007 and now returns for a recital with the sensational pianist Daniil Trifonov.

This sumptuous program celebrates the French musical voice, with its distinctively dazzling variety of tonal effects. First up, a sextet for winds, strings, and piano by Guillaume Connesson—one of today’s most widely performed French composers—whose music has been called “a celebration of life, filled with joyous melodies, rhythmic vitality, and a sense of wonder" (American Record Guide). An elegiac oboe sonata by Poulenc, dedicated to the memory of his close friend (and bridge partner) Prokofiev, is followed by an original arrangement of Debussy's dreamy sunset in song. Our music, food, traditions and pastimes are influenced by many cultures from all over the world, including those indigenous to South Louisiana.
